Default Sportomatic help

I'm toying with buying a '68 Targa with a Sportomatic. I am somewhat reluctant, but this will be a collector car to undergo full restoration. Anyone know if the tranny is a big deal or not? Thanks.

The tranny is avery big deal. Parts are almost non-existent for them nowadays. And if you find them, they are very used or very, very expensive. 5 speed is the only way to go in my opinion. Or a much later model with a Tiptronic.

If originality is an absolute, set aside between $5-8K for the Sporto system, and find someone that knows how to fix/prepare it (and interview him) before you buy the car.

I would not enjoy driving a sportomatic and I think resale will be a problem. I remember seeing one
at europeancollectibles and while everything else was selling, the sportomatic just sat there. IMHO I find a real Porsche.

The first restoration I was involved with was a 73 RS look, orange with recaros w/orange pinstipes. It was presented to Peter Gregg from the Porsche factory new and it was ......SPORTAMATIC. They are autocross sleepers and can be driven fast. Above metioned car was included in the opening credits for the Dream Car Garage show. I am not sure where the car is now but I belive it went to Maryland when we were done with it.

Thanks to all. I believe this car may have been from Pennsylvania. Again, I am no fan of automatics of any flavor. However, this car may be valuable as a collector show piece. My own brand of insanity will force me to restore the car to perfection including the tranny. After that, it will be driven on sunny days... I will continue to look for a pre- '73 (including '73 of course) at a reasonable price.

Thanks.
