Default 1990 Carrera 2 cpe or 1985 Cab $12,000 range

I am on to a couple of 150,000 mile cars that are in nice condition. The cab Prussian blue and is really nice and well kept the 2 is a little less so. Having followed the Carrera here I have an idea of the downside to the car. I have not followed the 964 1990 type. Any opinions, or are worse times likely to drive prices futher down and this is too early yet to buy our 2nd 911. The 964 side seems to forsee a softer market.

I have a 1990 C2 coupe and a 1984 Carrera coupe. You are comparing apples to oranges here with an '85 cabrio and a 90 coupe. What do you really want out of a 911? An open car? Daily driver? More refinement? More of a raw feel?

The 964's have a few issues, especially the early ones. The dual mass flywheels in use on early cars were prone to failure, but at this age, most of these cars have been updated with the more robust LUK flywheel.

The early 964's didn't have distributor belt vent. It's a 30 minute, $20 fix and at this age, the distributor belt should be changed anyway just due to age. Also, early 964's can have cylinder to head leaks. But, at 150,000 miles, I'm sure the C2 has a new clutch/flywheel, a fresh distributor belt and has survived this long without the cylinder to head leak (or has been fixed by now) and never will develop it.

I don't think the 964's will ever appreciate more than an equivalent 3.2 Carrera. They just have the ugly duckling of the 911 world stigma and it seems like it'll never leave these cars, similar to what the 2.7 liter cars 'enjoy' as a reputation.

It's pure speculation, but as the world comes back 'online' after this depression either in later 2009 or 2010, people will have more disposable income and prices may rise (or even escalate from pent up demand). I would bet that now, here in the first quarter of 2009, is really the low point and is a great time to find a 911 at a reduced price.

Hope this helps,

Jay
