Default Looking for First 911

Hi everyone, I've had my 89 928S4 for over 15 yrs now and usually hang out on teh 928 forum. I've wanted a 911 for a long time and think that I want an '89 due to the G50 transmission. I'm interested in this car and was wondering what the experts think. It's in my price range.

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...eadExists=true

My concern is that the car has 14,000 and I know 911 rebuilds are prohibitively expensive. I tend to keep my cars forever. Also, I live in Alabama and like to drive my cars and have heard that the 911's A/C is weak. I've seen the Kuehl ads etc and was wondering if AC should be a deal breaker or is an update to a workable system. Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated.

Steve, I just briefly looked over the ad, but 6 months ago I think that car would have been a steal at that price. I'm not sure what they are doing since the economy has crapped out. He says it had a "recent valve job", which is a big plus. You should find out how long ago that and the clutch happened. If you are looking for a G50 car, you can also expand your search to include 87 & 88 model years as well. The AC will be weak, and if you care about things like that, you will probably find yourself doing some update work, which can be a little pricy... There are a lot of threads on this topic, you should try a search.
Good luck

I have an 83 SC. The AC on an 87-89 should be better... I bought a complete Rennaire System incl barrier hoses and Kuel Vents. Installed it myself. Spent anout 2,200. Get about 36 degrees at the vents with it 80 outside. We are 92-95 degrees every day for 4+ months here in Houston, and even with the upgrade it doesnt keep it cool in the mid afternoon. It also runs hotter with the AC. It does make the car bearable though which it wasnt before the upgrade. Its a personal choice whether $2,200 for "bearable" is worth it. I personally got tired of sweating.

On the posting. Price seems alittle high for a car with 140k on the clock although it seems to have some upgrades such as the SSI's/Dansk. That alone is about 2k. Have a good PPI done. Might be ok. Have an open mind and dont necessarily buy the first one you see...

I wonder if the guy writing the description is the owner. It does not have turbo brakes. Nor are they anti-lock. Bucket seats? I guess they are all bucket seats, but the special ones are sport seats, which those are not. Premium sound? Does he mean factory radio? I noticed that the cruise control appears to not be the vacuum operated one. Maybe it's got an electronic servo? I'd ask about that and ask if it works. The interior is in nice shape, but what is that on top of the dash?

I'd ask for documentation of the top end valve job, and make sure it's not just a valve adjustment. For some reason, I just don't trust this seller from the way he describes the car.

My gut tells me that the car might be worth less than $18.5K.

Rusnak nailed it-some questions in the description.

Don't get hung up on 140K miles, 911's run a long time if cared for. I also wouldn't get hung up on G50's, the 915 is still going strong in thousands and thousands of 911's.

I think this car is what many of us would want to have for a great weekend toy. The brakes could be "Drilled Zimmermans" that look like the real thing and are fine for street use. I'd rather see an airbox and not see the front oil cooler duct sticking out of the front bumper, but other than that the car looks good.

That is one of the very last true 911 ever built. It made it in under the wire by just a couple months.

I remember cars with no a/c and we survived. I've lived in Texas most of my life and grew up here as a kid. My 84 911 is lacking in the a/c department but I enjoy driving it more than having the comfort of something else. Maybe we've grown soft, I'm 63 and still love it.

You are probably right on the AC. i think that before the traffic was so bad it was alittle more bearable. I dont mind no AC with the top off at 80 mph... but sitting still in traffic? I have become resistant to that... In the end its what makes you happy...
