I bought an unassembled '70 motor. I'm planning on putting it together and I noticed my case has already been modified for case savers but the case savers I bought are too big (14mm x 2.0). My case is threaded with 12mm x 1.5. Are these case savers available? If so, any concern with them?
Thanks,
Tom

OK, here's the deal. Case savers are available in different sizes including 12mm x 1.5, 1/2" x 20, 14mm x 2.0, etc. Many shops start with the 12mm x 1.5 in case the repair might need to be done a second time down the road. The problem is that the thread is too fine, as is the 1/2" x 20, and those threads won't hold onto the magnesium as tight as the coarse thread 14mm x 2.0 will.
Therefore, experience has shown that 14mm x 2.0 is the way to go. If you want the case fixed, including a line-bore inspection, call Bill & Dick at Engine Machine Service in L.A., (310) 641-7019. Great guys and they do it right the first time - every time.
Thanks for the valuable info. I can understand how the coarser thread would be stronger. I will take your advice because I don't want to cut any corners. I appreciate the machine shop reference too.
Cheers,
Tom
