OOPS. Heh Heh This is slightly embarassing but I'm going to leave my previous post up to help someone else who may read this thread later.

Jim, I tested mine again just to be sure. I realized that I had the unit upside down.

.46 v closed

Then a smooth arc to about 4-5 v half way

8.29 v WOT

9.32 v power

Jeezus at least I didn't send it in to be rebuilt or buy a new one.

I hate to *** U ME but as an amateur I think I am on the right track and even Steve finds it interesting what I discovered and he is recommending others to check voltage prior to and during arm adjustment.

German Auto Specialist (ebay) has a 200 Mile one off of a 87 for $400 ebay and Jascha here has a 60K one for $175 he stated it was "linear". Not sure if he bench tested it. Another ebayer got one for $175 and 90K, never opened but 75K is the demarkation so I passed on that one.

I'm waiting for the 40K one, it was never opened so I am hoping it's good, Pelican stated it was, will report.

If you do open her up, try both gradual movement of the arm and at each degree designated by each connection of the potensioner.

Hewh! You dodged a Bullet!

Good Job, I tested mine 10 times, I was hoping I did something wrong but no luck there like you.

OK that makes 3 guys that got readings like the 944 guy with the 9 Volt Battery Bench Test.

My AFM is SHOT. Can't wait to get the new 40K one.

Can you not re-arc the brush arm? Say, 1mm or so... Wouldn't that give the brush a clean track to ride on without changing the resistance too much?

What about rubbing an eraser over it like a slot car set?

Isn't it just a giant pot?

Hey Doug,

Yes, you can but it is highly recommended that you use a DVM on 9 volt battery when making the adjustment.

What I have discovered is too much tension will give a low voltage reading and too little tension will give too high of a voltage. That's why some guys were unsuccessfull in doing the proper adjustment adding fuel for someone to beat them down.

It has to be just right so you get 0.50 volts at rest, 0 Degrees, Barn Door Closed then 8.50 volts WOT.

I rubbed & cursed but to no avail. She just laughed at me and said nope you idiot I ain't going to fix. :P

You see in my situation, the potensioner film itself seems to be faulty, maybe heat warped or fractured internally.

Giant Pot? I don't understand? FOB here

Too bad the electronics can't be swapped out like the WOT switch or the ICV that just unplug and unscrew.

I did, it is actually Sfernice 8404. it is a hard item to find.

As I think of it, that means the re-built ones are fake rebuilds, they probably just relocated the arm and charge people for nothing. They probably toss out the broken potensioner one like mine.

That's why Marc at the shop has a huge stack of old AFMs! He knows better than to screw with them, or give one back to a customer along with a less than optimal running car. Also, he has not found anyone who can do a satisfactory re-condition of them as yet, but when he does he will probably have the market cornered!

Well the Verdict is in:

I received my New 40K AFM from a Pelican.

Tested the Ohms = 2.23
Tested the Voltage = 0 degrees @ 0.43 Volts - 110 dgrees @ 7.80 Volts, 9 Volt Battery @ 8.88 Volts.
Tension was at the wrong setting so I set back to OEM.
It was also a '88 production with the jumpered ground

$150 Shipped

Put her on the car, BINGO!

AFM was turned all the way in and I got a 0.43-0.63 Voltage at the O2 Sensor. I had to lower my Base Idle. No Sub-dips or Stall when cold.

Tomorrow I will be using a LM1 to fine tune the AFR.

Thanks Peter, Rusnak and all for your input.
