Red face Fuch wheels: Repair or replace

I noticed a layer of haze on my Fuch wheels that does not wash out. The local wheel shops said the wheels must have been sprayed with a chemical destroyed the anodized finish and would cost approximately $200 per wheel to repair.

So, knowing that a good set of after market wheels would cost just a little more, my question is whether to repair or replace them.

Thank you in advance.

For lightness and strength, it's really hard to beat Fuchs. Check out the articles at <a href="http://www.carcareonline.com/viewarticle.aspx?art=15" target="_blank">http://www.carcareonline.com/viewarticle.aspx?art=15</a> and especially <a href="http://www.carcareonline.com/viewarticle.aspx?art=6" target="_blank">http://www.carcareonline.com/viewarticle.aspx?art=6</a> which may help.

Send them to Al Reed's Specialty Polishing in Anaheim, California. He can refinish, polish, clearcoat, etc, pretty much anything you want and he is very reasonable. He also does a great job. I am a very satisified customer.

You can do a search here or on the Pelican website on Al Reed.

Very little on the market today is in the same class as the Fuchs in terms of lightweight, strength, durability. They are also hard to find because they are old so even $200 to bring each of them back to new condition is well worth it in my opinion.

I spent a little over $300 for Al Reed to refinish 4 wheels - and hand painted crests <img src="http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/nw1.jpg" alt=" - " />

It's worth the money...

Before you refinish them...

The black part on mine were pretty dull, but I was able to bring them back with clear-coat polishing compound. The black spokes on the SC/Carrera generation of Fuchs is not anodized, it's just a flat black paint. The silver rim and center caps are the only parts that are anodized.

I had to remove the wheels from the car, then went over them with the polishing compound (it takes a bit of rubbing, but not too much), then waxed them. They look brand-new now.

Have you tried using a little Vaseline on them? No personal experience, but I've heard that it works wonders.

If you have to refinish them, send them to Al Reed. He's done two sets for me, and his work is fantastic!

I concur. Use Al Reed. I had my Fuchs polished a year ago with no regrets. Due to the mild climate (no salt etc), I decided not to have them clear coated. No issues.

Your local plating/anodizing shop should be able to remove the anodizing for about $10-30/wheel then you can clean them up and re-anodize pretty cheaply.

I've had a few sets of race wheels stripped this way and haven't re-anodized them. Just left 'em stripped. Keep them waxed too. <img src="http://www.theplavans.com/photo%20archive%202-6-03/Picture%20pages/5-3-03/thumbnails/DSC00448_JPG.jpg" alt=" - " />

Yep, good advice, I would also redo your stock wheels! Good luck/skill!
