Has anyone dropped a 965 motor into an 83 SC?
Hey folks! I'm an import from the 964 and early 911 forums posting for the first time.
I did a quick search on whether anyone had tried this swap? I've seen and read several articles from recent 2 years of Excellence including this month that i just got tonite (must be a delay for us Canadians) and have seen quite a few 3.6L swaps. I've acquired a complete 1991 965 motor complete with motor mounts, intake, exhaust, electrical wiring harnesses, muffler, 965 wing etc and have found a nice looking 83 SC original paint, upgraded boxster brakes, front oil cooler with ss lines front to back, G50 trans with shorter bell housing that i'm told fits. Oh yeah, suspension is bilstein with weltmeister roll bars/ sways... biggest question is the wiring...
Help!
Thanks!
Happy New Year to all!

Its all very doable,...
These engine both use basically CIS fuel injection systems so the wiring is quite easy. Just avail yourself with the factory wiring diagrams for both the early 964T and SC and you'll be fine. You WILL need two front oil coolers, though,...

Steve,
Thanks so much for the quick reply! i'm not a wrench so i'll be farming the work out to a specialist. Can you give me an idea of how much i should budget to:
1. check the motor out - torque nuts and bolts to spec
2. assemble: wiring, hook up a/c, etc.
3. second oil cooler - would that go on the right side to balance out the one on the left side - would you recommend the RSR type oil cooler in the middle of the bumper? they sure look good but it seems a little exposed / at risk ? On my old pathfinder, i had a bush bar in more or less the same position...
Basically prepare the car so that i can fly into LA (where all the stuff is) and drive it home to Toronto - approx 2500miles... on as much of Route 66 as practical!

Okay, so i am now looking for someone to assemble the project in LA area. Any good recommendations?
I know the last post was a little vague as there are many variables. Keep in mind the 83 SC had a 964 carb'd motor producing 300+ horses (and similar torque).
A shop that can fabricate the odd piece here and there or a shop that has experience swapping the turbo motor into the SC would be ideal.

In critical health situations, get the best you can. For this type of situation, get the best you can.
Why not have the job done correctly the first time, at a reasonable price???????????????????????
Steve is in Portland I think. Ship the car there and get it right, first time. From LA maybe $400. It will save you a lot more than $400. HOWEVER, I would not waste his time getting detailed pricing to go shop it around. Try to use the time of someone who is not a primary asset to us all. Do your research and when you have the deal set and the $ call the right person for the job.
By the way, this now has my interest up for the 1983 SC we have. I think I could get an engine. I hope you will keep us up on the project.

Awesome post and advice Jakeflyer!!
Steve did my conversion and I'm in friggin Missouri!!
Well worth sending it to him, I was blown away by the attention to detail and the final product.
...also, spot on with the advice on Steve's time. The man has got to eat!
Don't cob him of his knowledge and then go elsewhere with it.

Alex: If you want to keep the car in the LA area, give Dave at TRE Motorsports in Van Nuys a call. www.tremotorsports.com. He's a great guy, and will take very good care of you!
Good luck, and post pictures of the results.
