The 997 is an amazing car. Much more capable than its predecessors.
Now here's where my opinions start: it's an improvement, visually, on the 996 -- but it still hasn't caught up with the 993. And it doesn't seem like Porsche's designers really understand that, which is a shame. It's almost like they handed the project off to some high-school-level automotive design class -- and it's a class without any kids who keep car posters on their bedroom walls. From some angles, that thing doesn't look like a Porsche at all.
That said, I've driven the new models at the track, and they're awesome.

I think the best thing for the 911 lover was the introduction of the Cayenne and the upcoming Panamera. With vehicles to satisfy the people that wish to have a Porsche, but still want comfort and the ability to haul people and stuff in comfort, the Cayenne can satisfy that need (and it's a really good truck too).
So, the 911 is no longer needed to be the GT type of car that the 996 had to be. Back then, only the Boxster and 996 existed, so I bet Porsche made the 996 a bit more GT than sports car to appeal to a wide market of buyers. Now, I bet we'll see the 911 continue to evolve into more and more of a sports car.
