Default Door hinges area in case of re-spray.

I'm wondering if I'll respray the chassis area where the door hinges are mounted in the same colour as the rest of the car or if I should leave it in the greyish (zinc) colour. Any advice ?

Spray it all! Today, the factory actually leaves the doors off the car to access those areas with paint and then they mount the doors later after they're dry. The bolts get painted later.

This is why a proper color-change costs so much! The doors should be removed, along with the front & rear lids, so all of the hinge areas, etc., can be stripped to bare metal, primered and then finished in the new color.

Pete don't forget all the trim and windows should be removed and the engine compartment will have to be prepped to accept the new "colour". And what about the weatherstrip on the top of the fenders. The fenders should come off also.

when you remove the doors, do you just remove the bolts and leave the hinge pin in, or do you need a special tool to pull out the hinge pin?

I've thought about removing the doors to replace some of the wiring to the alarm and stuff, but it seemed like a huge job, so I left it alone. Probably same line of thinking regarding the re-spray, even though it seems obvious that the job would look better as a result.

Good points! There is so much work to doing a proper color change that it's rarely worth the expense. I re-did a '66 911 back in the day. It was one of those cars that went to Earl Scheib every year or two for a paint job and new color. I took that car apart, stripped five different colors to bare metal (it had zero rust and had not been hit), and had the car "finished" and painted (black) by an expert. It turned out spectacular, but as I looked at the finished car I thought that if I ever did that for a customer I would charge about a million dollars!

Tx for the feedback guys. For the record, I am going to respray the entire car in the original colour (a 999 code). Wings, bumpers, doors, engine and glass are being removed.

Took a bit more time than anticipated but here she is. New paint, new rubbers, new clutch, new everything basically. Lots of money and 10 months of work.

Just read the thread and offer this to others who may be thinking of going the color change route. Doing a color change requires removing everything, hinges, door straps, pins, etc., to ensure the color gets to all areas. If only doing a same color respray, you do not have to remove the hinges. If you do, realignment of them is a bitch. Removal of the pins only on a respray would suit you better and all you have to do is insert the pins.

Very nice job on the repaint.
