Post 83 wide body (factory)

IM looking at a 1983 (factory widebody) Everything i have researched on this site tells me the factory wide bodies did not start untill 1984 with the 3.2 carrera. This is a grey market car so i was wondering if the option was available over seas before 84. If myself and the seller reach a price I am happy with I will take it to the dealer and have an inspection done at that time. When I looked at the door jam it said 911sc 3.0 but I think it also said M491? All info is appreciated.

I don't believe it was offered as the M491 package until the 3.2l Carrerras. Check the vehicle ID plate which should have all of the M option codes included. Do you have a VIN to narrow down the production timeframe?

Nate

I'd be interested in seeing your VIN number to compare. I just purchased a 1985 911 carrera cab turbo look. I have been trying to figure out wether the M-491 option is actually listed in the VIN number, or as an option number listed elsewhere on the vehicle. I have been decoding the VIN number and have not been able to determine which digit in the VIN number the M-491 option shows up.

Could it be that the M-491 option was just listed on the window sticker/certificate of origin, seperately?

Any thoughts? Thanks Gary

According to Porsche 911 Red Book, the options should be listed on the vehicle ID plate. The VIN only indicates the model, production date, etc and not the options included on the car. If you order the Cardex from PCNA, it will give you a complete option list.

Cool

nate

I assume you use this for racing. A good look....

I'm thinking of getting a performance chip for mine. Any thoughts, good or bad?

A chip won't make too much of a difference on an NA unless you have a lot of other mods.

I am a new subscriber to the forum and actually just posed a question regarding some VIN # questions I have on a car I would like to purchase.

You guys look like you are fairly well versed in VIN # de-cryption Here is the message - any help is appreciated!
cb
Message -
I am looking at purchasing a 1984 911 SC. I have run a car-fax on the vehicle, but am looking for a bit of insight into what a couple of items in the VIN # stand for.
Here it goes - hopefully this is clear-
WPO/ZZZ/91/Z/E/S/16/XXXX

Here is what i know-
WPO is the world code
ZZZ - What does this section mean?
91 - This is the body type
E - 1984 model year
S - built in Stutgart
15 - ??
XXXX - last four digits are serial #s for the individual car.

nate, you keep your car at bernie's house right?

chris, there is no such thing as a 1984 SC, the last year for the 911SC was 1983. the ZZZ in the vin means that it is a ROW-spec car, this means the car is grey-market and was imported privately. This can be both good or bad. If the conversion to USA legal glass and emissions equipment was done correctly then you're in good shape, if not then the car could have suffered problems. Also, it might have led a hard life in Germany prior to being shipped over. Plusses of the euro-spec cars are more horsepower, lower ride height which results in better handling and the thinner rear bumper pads which aren't as ugly and wide as the US ones.
