I have no way of conveying the depth pf my wish to buy an OLD Boxster (CHEAP) and watch for a wrecked (Ebay...) Prius' hybrid drive to put into the Boxster. Or maybe I'll hold out for a Caymen, kinda want one of those anyway.

Say, what a great idea. Let's get rid of that troublesome short lived 911 engine and replace it with a neat Subaru engine. While we're at it let's replace that antiquated Porsche suspension with the up to date Subaru stuff. The only thing left is that old fashioned 911 body. No problem. a modern Subaru body and interior is the ticket. We'll keep the Porsche hood crest of course. Now we've really got something. And cheap too. SUPER

This T5 sports a 450hp 3.6L 6-cylinder boxer motor transplanted from a Porsche 911, rockets from 0-60 in 5.1 seconds and top out at more than 165mph. It also received a big Brembo brake upgrade, lightweight alloy wheels, hand-stitched leather interior, and a host of options, including a backup camera hidden behind the rear emblem. When reverse is selected, the emblem swings up and the camera peeps out. Pretty trick! And the the hardwood truck bed is no joke either. Want one? The dude who built this knockout will custom build one just for you for the low, low price of $145,000 Euro?plus the cost of a T5.

The simple fact is that many engines are better designed than the air cooled flat 6, which is not surprising assuming you believe that engineering produces technological advancement.
The water-cooled flat 6 is an example: it can cool the valve area of the combustion chamber more, permitting 4 valves; it has a much lower parts count; it produces more hp for its size and wt.
Electric powertrains provide significant advantages for a sports car, including a lower center of mass and LOTS OF TORQUE. The advantages will grow over time with additional R&D. An analogy could be made to DSG - it's better but maybe not as much fun. Did I mention torque???
OTOH, if you like vintage then there is no substitute for an early car with its nice heavy motor in the back so you can steer with your foot.

- the M96 motor weighed only 402 lbs. compared to 512 lbs. for the last of the air-cooled motors in the 993
- unfortunately, part of that was elimination of the dry sump and its pumps
the M96 motor had only 408 parts (rel. to 480) and took only 1 hour to build as vs. 7 man-hours
The M96 motor was a full 3” shorter than the air cooled 993 engine

I met a guy in SAN Diego who had a VW Sq back with an electric motor conversion. It used the standard trans and was very quick.
The batteries were in the front. Seemed like a great concept to me.
Didn't make the right sound but who cares?

A Subaru in a 911? No, that's just dumb.
Maybe in a VW Vanagon, that would be interesting, like a 3.0 911 in a baja bug sort of way.
But Subaru into a 911 is like putting a Nissan 300ZX motor into a Jag. Everyone would wonder wtf do that.
