I own a 1986 911 m491 cabriolet and I have a couple of quick questions.
VIN WPOEB0919GS170318
Orig color was Iris Blue but I am currently having it painted Guard Red
I have been told by numerous people that there were only 8 m491's cabriolets imported into the US.. I am hoping someone here might have any information on the legitimacy of that statement.
Also I am in the process of having the car repainted guard red and I haven't decided on what color I am doing for the interior - camel or black...any suggestions.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Changing color will really affect the price when you want to sell it someday. To change a color properly, every nook and cranny on the car needs to be painted the new color. I spent 400 hours on a car removing all the paint on it, under it, engine compartment, etc. You basically have to tear it down to a restoration level to do it right. But, it's your choice.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Go to Yahoo Groups and join the Turbo Look group. These folks can tell you just about everything concerning the 491 option. Spider 911 is spot on concerning the paint change.

I purchased the car in Dec. 2007, at that time the car's original exterio paint of Iris Blue Metallic - was painted yellow. The paint job was not a quality job.
My questions regarding the number of 86 911 carrera cabriolet wide bodys that came into the USA, is based on - one hand the information I have received from PCA - showing eight cars and confirmation verbally from Hurley Haywood versus the more than eight cars showing of the Internet as being 86 -911 cabriolets with M491. My COA shows factory M491.
Thanks

I just did a color change on a 1983 911SC that came out excellent. HOWEVER::::: The car was the gold that had been reshot a slightly more copper color. It was a truly ugly color and the whole car needed a repaint. IF it had been ANY other color, I would have gone with the original color. Also, the copper and the stone grey we used actually blends failry well where the painter cant get to. it.
If I had your car I would go with the original blue. It is a nice color and the original color. And, when you pull the carpets out and peek into deep places, the color is a match.

But in the end, color it what your heart desires, it's your baby.

If that were my car, I think I would return it to the original Iris Blue. Not only is it a beautiful colour, but it will once again match the option codes. At some point, our older cars need to be repainted, but doing it in the original colour for an original M491 where there are only 8 examples just makes sense to me. Just my .02 cents.

^ at this point, does it matter?
--Any serious buyer will know there were several color changes.
--The car was already repainted when he bought it.
--With ready access to flares/bodywork there are alot of widebody cabs out there.
--His car, his color, but maybe I'm biased towards G-Red.

and as to the validity of the claim ? this came up very recently for the T/L cars. Porsche lists the T/L as an option on existing chassis, and they apparently do not have numbers on how many cars got what options.

Which means he should paint it BACK to the original color.
Totally agree, he can do what he wants.
