I, too, use a cover. Primarily because my cats regard the Cab top as a hammock.

I've used expensive ones and cheap ones. Can't tell much difference. In some ways, the cheap non-waterproof have worked better for me because they seem to trap less moisture. The rain goes right through, but it also dries quicker if I neglect to get the cover off quickly.

It's not always possible to clean the car before it goes on (I've even put it on my car wet... because I HAVE TO because the cats will be all over it). I've never had a cover scratch my car.

I can't keep a cover for more than 2 yrs. But whatever you spend for one will be worth it.

Put an outdoor cover on it, drive the car...it will be fine.

Thumbs up I have a premium color Boxster S, so the 911 stays outside...

but under a carport. During rainstorms, I add tarps around the carport sides to keep it dry. The 911 is the first drive choice, if possible.

I take the Boxster out of the garage when top down weather is calling me.

I have two inside and one outside. By all means, keep them inside if you can.
If your car is a "driver" then it's no big deal. If it is a "collectible" then store it if you can. Over the years, there is a remarkable difference even if you don't drive it in the rain and snow. Corrosion depends upon temperature and moisture as you know. The sun is the worst enemy for your paint. Covers are not a good solution. When your car is dirty, but not ready for a wash, do you throw on a cover? I never do.

Around here there is a company that sells inexpensive structures called "Tuffshed" with rollup doors and they are weathertight. Metal stud construction, and you can add custom touches such as a skylight.

My car currently lives outside. It isn't the preferred solution for me but it beats driving something else.

You can't really keep them under trees.

The finish on my 87 911 has withstood years of Florida sun. Rust is a non issue. It is not perfect and I would drive it if the cops wouldn't have made me second thought running it through the gears for a while. You can keep your car in as new condition only if you keep it inside your garage. FWIW Pops has a truck (read tow vehicle) in the garage that looks new. The targa top will not last forever in the sun rather 10 - 20 years max. And that is not bad.

My 99 is strong but a pain to wax every week.

Painting my 69 presently and it is going outside too. You see outside means can go to get a newspaper and get back inside and the garage door opener doesnt get people's ears pointing towards you.

Your car can handle it. If you have some you dont use then a garage can keep them new.

Here Florida highways are harsch on valences and bumpers. This frontal area has been a bigger issue for me over the years rather than the rain.

I think you said lots of rain in your area. Have you looked at C4s?

Regards,

My old '76 sat outside and was my DD in New Orleans all through grad school. Not one issue. Keep it clean, and take care of it and you won't have any problems.

My project to turn the car port into a garage didn't pan out so my car is partially in the elements this winter. I got a nice car cover for it though. I've been taking it out on clear days for short runs or at the vary least starting it and letting it warm up once a week. Once the snow arrives here, it stays until spring, so if I do get it out it is still being driven on snowy roads. Surprising how well it behaves with the fat summer tires in the snow.

Ian,

Short runs or just warming up in the drive way is not exactly good. I would either take it for a long run or don't start it at all.

If you don't move it much. Outdoor Car Capsule is an option. http://www.gardenofspeedin.com/produ...ail=809&sub=34
