Default Trade: (3.2) Custom SS Headers and Muffler for Stock Exhaust?

Hello all,
I'm a watercooler transplant who may be purchasing a 88' Carrera with a custom exhaust. The issue I will be encountering is the exhaust has no heat exchangers and no cat. Unfortunately being a resident of Connecticut neither of these features are of much benefit to me. To pass emissions I need a cat and to stay warm in the cooler months I need heat.

So the question follows.

Is it reasonable to believe that a fellow 911 owner might be interested in trading straight across, custom SS headers and muffler for a stock exhaust including the HEs and Cat?

(BTW, it sounds darn mean and its a shame I'll need it to go)

This is an important requirement, in that, the wife will not allow one red cent more to be spent on purchase for at least a year/or until which time the current and prevailing emotional conditions change. Keep in mind I have clearance for a PPI, taxes, insurance and gas but above and beyond the purchase price there will be nothing spent or I'll be looking for a new home in 2009.

I wish you would have asked a few weeks ago before I bought a new M&K for my 3.2 with stock heat exchangers. I would have loved to trade you.

stock exhausts come up on Pelican routinely IIRC. It might help if you provide more details as to this "custom exhaust".

So your plan is to buy a 911 and not to spend a dime on it in the first year? Interesting.

That will be a tall order, but there is some chance especially with a good PPI..... We're not talking 944's or 928's here.

Regarding not spending any money on the car. I'm talking improvements, mods and money just to get the car ready for registration and emissions. I do expect and plan on maintenance expenses.

I'll get more info on the "Custom exhaust" and post back.

OK the headers are listed as SSI Headers at $1200 and the muffler is listed simply as Custom SS muffler at $850.

I would be looking to trade these 2 items for a complete stock exhaust.

931GT,

You should be able to pick up a stock exhaust easily. They are listed on Pelican, Rennlist, and PCA classifieds from time to time. I would guess $500 complete. You can sell those SSIs easily. You should be able to get $500-700 for the SSIs as long as they are un-damaged. In fact, I am interested if you do get them and sell them. You should be able to sell the muffler also, but knowing the manufacturer would help.

They're SSI's, but if they are true headers amd they don't have heat-what are they worth?

What ever someone is willing to pay for them... I didn't know SSI made a system without heat.

You would no doubt be able to offload the headers for a decent price heat or not, I would say the other forum would be the place to do it, many hot rods over there. I would imagine a stock system would only be worth $200-$300 max, if you were local I would give you mine.

I once picked up a used muffler for $30 if that helps.

Pictures of this system might also help.

Man I feel your pain. I have an 85 911 that I have owned for 20 yrs and modified for street/track, DE and autocross. I also bought and restored a Honda CB1100F LAST winter. recently bought a 84 928S for pleasure driving.

thought I was going to end up in the doghouse. the wives/girlfriends just don't understand us

the 928 is in very good shape but I need a couple things, and also still need the new sport seats/roll bar for the 911 due to new PCA DE rules to use 5pt harness.

Yup... the doghouse is exactly where I'll be sent if I don't proceed with caution. I'm gonna be pretty tough as far as the PPI goes, thats for sure... I can already see the look on my wifes face if in March I tell her, "I gotta take the Carrera to the shop, I think it needs a clutch".

She deserves credit though, after going through 5 different boats, the last one receiving a new four stroke outboard, and 3 different "fun" cars, the most recent being my 924 Carrera GT project (almost finished BTW) and the many thousands spent on repairs, restorations and upgrades, she been something of a good sport. I just need to minimize any "elective spending" on this car and I should be alright.

Thx for the link Tracker thats certainly got it right.
