Default cat bypass?

do you feel modest power gains in doing this or just significant noise. any feedback from guys who have done this is greatly appreciated.

Sounds different, not really much louder, just throatier. Any power gains I felt were either from the placebo effect or from that my old cat was getting a little plugged. I didn't chip mine.

If you use a Bursch or other straight pipe bypass, you will encounter much more resonance. If you go to a European pre-muffler pipe such as Fabspeed or GHL, the resonance is hardly noticable, if at all. The pre-muffler has baffles inside it that keep the resonance down. I tried several different brands on my 88 Carrera and found the Fabspeed worked very well on my car.

I did this and didn't notice any difference at all. I also tried the muffler bypass and while it was much louder I didn't notice any power improvements. Now SSIs...

I bought the Fabspeed and I like the sound and the low end torque. It's really beautiful, with mirror like stainless but it costs a lot more than some cat bypass pipes. I'm not recommending the Fabspeed, just saying I bought one and like it.

I noticed a small increase in throttle response just off idle, but no difference at higher rpms.

The reason I bought one? Easy. Look at the cost of a new catalytic converter. I'm saving mine for smog check time. Otherwise I'm going with the cat bypass for daily driving. I'm thinking it might lower my engine temps in the summer time, but I have not had it long enough to know if that is the case or not.

I have a GHL single in/out muffler, Fabspeed euro premuffler, and a SW chip, and all of those together will give you a modest boost in performance. My car sounds fantastic (other's agree), but the Fabspeed was the last piece I added, and honestly, I couldn't tell a bit of change in the exhaust sound (the GHL provides that ). Well made product...I have no regrets.

These cars have check engine lights?

I would just make sure that if you car has a O2 sensor then get a cat with an 02 sensor bung.

Yeah, I guess you got me.

I suppose I really meant will it screw anything up in the electronics, etc. and I knew the CEL was always an issue with any exhaust/header/cat changes on my old Boxster S.

Why don't all people put their car info in their signatures? It wouldn't make a difference here assuming the cars all being discussed are SC's or Carreras. But, there seem to be a number of threads where a question that's model dependent is asked, with no info to help in answering.

I also installed a Fabspeed cat by and M&K 1 in 1 out muffler on my '85 Targa last year. I experienced an immediate boost in performance. I guess my cat must have been plugged pretty good. Seems like back pressure was eliminated after the change. Pick up noticably improved.....so did the sound.
