Maybe this is just a quirk, but every so often I'll hear a soft but quite audible groan from the steering wheel. Not sure if that's a good description (onomatopoeia, gee I'm glad to see ya). I usually only notice it when I'm just pulling her into the garage as the wheels straighten out, maybe lasting 2 or 3 seconds.
I don't hear/notice it other times, but that could be due to road noise. I don't hear it when I pull out. It's coming from the steering wheel or possibly somewhere in the column, and sounds like something might be rubbing. I couldn't characterize it better than that (can't say if it's friction between metal or hard plastic surfaces I'm imagining).
I don't notice any steering issues, and I haven't checked the joint under the boot.
Any ideas folks? No biggie, just thought I'd post for some input.
Thanks,

Is there any up and down play in the steering wheel? The upper bearing in your steering column has a plastic bushing inside it that commonly fails. Pelican sells a metal bushing that you tap in from the top that fixes the problem for about $13 and a half hour's work.

It could be the horn contacts rubbing. I have the same squeel and no play at low speeds into my driveway as well. I have been meaning to look into it and place some di-electric grease to keep the noise down.

TT - no play here, and once you mentioned that I recalled and checked my records, the PO replaced the steering bushing 2 years ago - think I can rule this out?
Draco - that squeel you mention sounds more descriptive.
Thanks guys - I'll add this to my list of things to check.
