Default Engine rebuild

What is the average cost for a complete rebuild of an early street prepared "mild" engine?
Cheers

$10k - $12k. Half that if you DIY and don't make any mistakes.

With early 911s the cost can vary a bit, as there are lot of things you might not think need to be replaced might need to be. Just for examples: Distributors- shaft and bearing wear, some of the older distributors are getting harder to find and the trusted few to properly rebuild them charge accordingly
Oil thermostats- not long ago I watched a gaggle of oil thermostats being tested and not one of them, including a brand new out of the box one, passed the workshop manual specifications.

As DWalker says, LOTS of variables depending on what is, or is NOT. in spec. New cams, pistons, cylinders, etc. can cause costs to skyrocket quickly. You may want to get Wayne Dempseys book which is great for outlining what has to be done and the approx. shops hours involved.
Just as a data point, I was quoted $8-10K for a top end ONLY by a well known Porsche shop here in the DFW area. That sealed if for me and I did the whole rebuild (down to crank) myself, although I sent many parts out to be inspected by a Porsche shop and had the heads rebuilt by Walt at Competition Engineering. They were so gorgeous I almost wanted to just put them on display somewhere in the house. For some reason my wife was not as excited. Maybe if they'd come from Nordstroms...

I would offer that the $10K bottom could happen, but I'd put the upper cost closer to $16K. You really have to disassemble your core and check every part before you'll know for sure.

That is what I assumed.
I have the car with a reputable Porsche specialist here in Toronto as of today. He will have the car until March. He will build it slowly and properly for a small fortune. Now it is time to explain to my boss, (wife) how this is an investment. The engine works well but it is time for the 42 year old little honey to have some proper pampering.

On a side note i searched rebuild costs and came across this Motormiester place in California is claiming they can throw a rebuild together for 3000 dollars. I would imagine it would be a good idea to avoid them like the plague!
Thank you all for the replies
Cheers

You have a GREAT imagination then. More horror stories than praise I've seen over the years.

Yep, they're not lying. They'll do it for $3k. And then someone else will do it all over again for another $10-16k.
