Yeah, I'm passing on it. When a seller has a story for everything and no reason for anything, time to walk.
Come on! A week and 1/2 at a detail shop? How many detail shops are going to let an expensive Porsche sit at their shop while they're responsible for it, take up space, AND take a week and 1/2 because they're just THAT busy?! I kept thinking to myself, this isn't a detail shop, it's probably an auto body shop! This one excuse alone made me smell fish...and this 911 may be a sinking ship!

Well FYI, the detail shop I brought mine to (appointment, of course), parked her right out front to highlight the "quality of vehicle" they service. ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Without more info, price of car, more car-specific info, etc., I am 50/50 on the situation. Stuff happens, I know some people who get into cars, get bored / frustrated & just want OUT when they're ready. They want to do the right thing, spending the bucks to fix things right, and do, but find they can't justify after, or are gun-shy about keeping the car in case this is just one in a number of repairs they're going to need to make, etc.

A "rebuild" of engine or tranny means 20 different things to 20 different people. Beware! If every part and procedure is not documented, then assume that it has been overlooked or short-cutted. This is for your peace of mind when any joe schmuck can "rebuild" with shoddy parts and slap it together ...then the new owner pays for these shortcomings, and pays dearly.
When in doubt, run. Porsches are just too expensive to repair to roll those dice. On the flip side, they are tremendously reliable when properly cared for ...of whose owners document their care because that is what they are like.![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Dealers always seem to want too much for these cars. ( they want $5-8 k of profit and think that the 911 mystique will lure somebody.)
Your problem is that you know too much and act too prudently.
For $22K you could have my '86 coupe with more work than that one done by a reputable PCAR mechanic and documented.
For 22K you should be looking for the perfect 3.2 car.
That one may be 12K if it checks out well.

gerry100,
Thanks for the offer on your coupe, but I'm looking specifically for a Targa. And thanks for those words of wisdom.
zuffi,
Cool, you're in SF?! You're Targa looks sweet and clean. Private party, dealer, friend, where'd you find her? Also, got any recommendations for a good shop to do a PPI in SF? Sometimes I've seen P's in SF.

My coupe is not really for sale, not perfect and, not worth $22k but it is definitely a more solid car with 118K miles than this one appears to be.
I think these older cars are better purchased from a private owner , preferably a caring enthusiast with maintenance records. If not , the car can be discounted approriately.
A typical used car dealer ads little or no value to this transaction.
Good luck w your search
