You can pretty much put in any air-cooled engine you wish. The 3.6's require some different engine mounts and hardware but almost anything is possible.

I would be concerned about your 901 transmission as a 3.0 makes really too much torque for that thing. There are some modifications one can do to the 901 to make it a bit stronger but care is stil required.

I put a 3.0 in a 1969 911T. It wasn't especially difficult. I used a 915 transmission complete with rear suspension, brakes and axles/CV's from a donor '78 SC. I converted the CIS to PMO carbs which made the wiring and fuel systems a no brainer. With a euro 3.0 Carrera centrifugal advance distributor, reground cams and SSI heat exchangers the thing ripped! Motor and trans mounts mated right up to the old '69 with no problem.
