Default 911 Buying: need help in Honolulu, Hawaii ?!?

Hi there,

my name is Martin and I am from Melbourne/Australia. I am thinking about swapping one of my 928s for a 911.
I am eyeballing an 1986 model, but it is a fair way to swim for me just to have a look (Honolulu, Hawaii).

Therefore I was wondering if there are any members down that way who could be kind enough to go over the car and give me an unbiased appraisal of the car or know of some trusty professional who could do that?
Any help, tips, tricks and advise is highly appreciated.
Is a 1986 withj a VIN: WP0EB0910GS... already G50 or still 915 gearbox?
Thanks and best regards

G50 came out in 1987. The 86 had a 915 gearbox.

Hi Spider,
appreciate the heads up. How much more desireable are those G50s for street application anyways?
915 should be able to cope with day to day touring duty?
Like your colour combination, by the way...

Best regards
Martin

Obersturm, I've had 19 Porsche's in 40 years. One was an 87 Carrera and the one I have now is an 88 Carrera. For me, the G50 is much smoother than the 915. If I had another choice without additional cost, I would go for an 89 Carrera....latest model in that series 87-89.

Martin,

The 915 is a durable transmission. They tend to need to be rebuilt in the 100,000 to 130,000 mile range. I run a 1984 911 on a nearly daily basis and the 915 is just fine in all sorts of traffic. Second gear can't be rushed on these boxes, but otherwise, they shift very well for what they are.

G-50's have always been slightly more desireable, but there are plenty of folks who prefer the old school feel of the 915. I purposely skipped the G-50 trans cars when I was looking for my latest 911. I've said in the past that I'd take a fresh 915 equipped car over a trashed G-50. However, try to drive good examples of both versions of transmissions and decide for yourself which you prefer.

Good Luck,

Jay

I wouldn't. Our local dealer deals mostly with the water cooled cars and some 993s. They rarely work on air cooled 911s. Where is the car located? Private owner or dealer? PM me if you wish.

The only 86s I know for sale locally are the white wide body cab and the Speedster conversion. Is it one of those? The Speedster was offered to the local PCA members at a lower price, than posted on Craigslist and the newspaper.

Hi Bryan,

good to hear from you?
It is the Speedster.

Chris, the current owner, told me via email that he bought it off Bobby Duckworth 5 years ago. He did the conversion and Chris only did 1000mls in it? I presume he is in Honolulu?
Where would you go for the PPI and where is your friends workshop?

White wide body.....mmmhhh.
Maybe should have a look at that one as well? Have you got a link and some specs? Is it a good one (G50)?

Best regards from Down Under

Martin
