Happened to me once. Oil light went off on a remote road in my old 91 golf. Checked the dipstick and there was nothing on it. So my friend, who was tailing me, gave me a lift to the cottage as we just left the car behind. Next morning I show up with 4L of oil and put it in (didn't check the dip stick). 10 Seconds down the road and my friend, who was once again tailing me, disappears in a thick cloud of smoke.

Turns out I had a malfunctioning idiot light and in the middle of the night with the oil hot it is very very hard to see it on the dipstick. So it had twice as much oil. Had to drain it on the side of the highway (messy) and continue. It was still pumping smoke for a good 15Km. Lesson learned. Thank god it was an old 1.8L VW engine, damn near indestructable.
