If nothing else is busted, it's about 4 hours of work plus a gasket which is around $60.00 in Canada plus 4 hours times the going labour rate where you live. BTW, that's for a 3.2 engine.

You could do it yourself.

Add the cost of an oil and filter change to that too.
It would be alot more work to try and do it without letting the oil out.

It's actually not bad at all, you just do one side at a time. I have done it, it really was no more effort.

It's part of the maintenance service, which would include and oil and filter change anyway, not really seeing the point of only doing a valve adjustment. Worth doing a leakdown and compression check when the plugs are out.

Just the cost of the gasket kit if you do it yourself. My first time it took me two days. I used the backside method. Very rewarding project, because there is a noticeable difference in performance and decreased noise.

I wouldn't remove the plugs to do a valve adjustment. If you are also replacing the plugs as part of that service then I would wait until after the valve adjustment is complete.

Matt,
If you are refering to the possibility of carbon dropping down onto the exhaust valve seats and changing the valve clearance setting, I understand that.

That's what I was getting at.

Cheers!

Leo: I did the valve adjustment myself. I had never adjusted a valve on anything before in my life. And to be honest, it was the first time I ever used a feeler guage. Still came out ok. I have one (?) valve too loose and it ticks. But overall a success.

I also changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and of course new gaskets on the valve covers. Estimate to do the valve adjustment and "tune up" that I did was $900 at the mechanic. Took me 16hrs but there's a huge learning curve. I adjusted the valves 3 times during the process and was learning way more than most along the way. Great experience. You might consider doing it yourself. Otherwise, I'd plan on $600 - 900 depending on what all you have done.

That's what I do! They know every time I come home there will most likely be fresh oil stains on the garage floor.

Also consider the Bently manual, the two seem to compliment each other nicely IMO.

You aren't alone. I don't have a garage either and had to borrow space in a friend's garage.

Old Man Neri has it right. Wayne's book is valuable, but far from comprehensive. There are some vital bits of info missing. Don't own a 911 without owning a Bentley Manual.
