The engine I plan on building is going to be 3.2 based, 3.0 crank, 98mm bore, twin plug, heads worked to the hilt, PMO EFI, cams unknown at this point. Making this happen is going to be an adventure.

I would think that 15k would get you a reliable motor in the upper two hundred horse power range.

I love a rev happy motor.

However, going with a good used 993 3.6 conversion w exaust and chip reflash for a very flexable power band and about 300 low stress hp.

Then you have a no mistake, factory built, sealed, no cam adjustment required motor that should last forever. Sell the 3.2 off for $5-6k to help finance the conversion. No messing around trying to get it right, no bad habbits...

Just a thought.

the first $10,000 you put into the motor is the most important

For the most part, I agree with you. But, one could spend a fair amount of money doing this, and find out the hard way that there is an issue with the 3.6. That could make it very expensive. The odds of this are slim, but you truly do not know what you may find.

Many have been trying to convince me to go with the 964 or 993 car, rather than invest countless hours and even more countless $$$$ with a 1974 with a 3.2 motor.

There is at least a 50% loss in building a racing machine, or hot street car. I have owned 2 race cars and about 10 race motorcycles. I bought them completed and functional at 1/4 to 1/2 of what it would cost to build. Modified and race machines are more difficult to sell because of drastically lower demand, hard use, and you cant get a loan from the bank. A fresh re-do car would be the ticket. Even a tired car may pencil out if the tranny works well and the engine still runs. If $15,000 is the cost of an engine, $20,000 for a ready car makes sense.

My 3.2L cost 15K to build up, it has:

Euro PC
WebCams 20/21
Port, Polished and flowed intake
SSIs
2in2out M&K pipe
Custom chip requiring 93 octane fuel
Full WideBandO2 monitoring system

Last dyno run it pulled 223 rwhp or with 15% drivetrain loss 262 hp at the crank.

That's what about $15,000 brought to a very tired 3.2L

Bottom line is it takes a lot of cash to make significant HP performance above the stock engine. Porsche did not leave much on the table.
