Default tonneau

Hi

Tonneau covers like the old MGs amd TRs had that zipped shut when leaving the car.

Anyone know if one was done for the carrera cab?

cheers

Yes I believe it was an option. I know that the owner's manual in my '87 Cabrio has the instructions on its fitting and operation. In fact, on my dash there are a couple plastic caps where the cover would button down.

Nope. They come up for sale occasionally - usually in black. In the $350 + range. But I am not sure whether it is 'one-size-fits-all' for 83s & Carrera models.

I picked one up last year.

Do you have the Tenax fasteners on the dashboard? I know my Cab came with them, and I had no idea what they were until I got the tonneau.

Someone told me there was a difference in the Speedster vs regular Cab fastener placement & size of tonneau, not sure about that though.

I have been caught out in surprise rain with the tonneau on, works great. Fold the sunvisors under the windshield & you're all set, providing you park so that the water doesn't run forward toward the dash...

I use it primarily for sun coverage, really. You can drive with it, though it can flap around a bit at highway speeds.

Hi Fred - no my car doesnt have any dash mounted tenax fastners, I guess over here in the UK tonneaus were fewer in number as we have the roofs up more than warmer climates.
But I will keep looking - I presume that the tenax fastners are a simple install so long as I can find a cover.
Cheers

What kind of a top do you have? I think there is a difference between power and manual top tonneaus. I have a full tonneau and have only used it once. In the pic, you'll see the pop ups for the seat headrests.

I have a manual top (manual seats also), and my tonneau does not have the headrest pops. You can see in my picture, I keep the pass seat tipped back so it does not bump the tonneau up. With 1 seat up, it's ok as far as zipping, etc.; with both seats up, it's very tight. I usually drop both for extended sun-baking, as I'm not looking to cause any irregularities with the top of the driver's headrest.

Years ago a dealer had one laying around and gave it to me. I did not have preinstalled fasteners. You have to drill three holes in the dash, two on the black metal strip adj to the window on each door. The rear uses the attachment for the boot if you have them. Inside of the rear, on the carpet snaps can be added which the black elastic straps attach to so the top is stable at high speeds. Also was able to get from the dealer plastic caps which fit over the dash attachments, not needed, just a detail. Used the cover to determine fastener locations. It's a little unsettling to drill into a nice dash. There is something firm under the leather the the screws bit into. Glenn

Glenn, mine was already done, and I had the "nipple" tips over the dash Tenaxes. I had no idea what they were - I thought they were used to assemble the dash or something at first. Wasn't until I got the tonneau & noticed the pattern matching up that I discovered they were caps that'd just pop off.
