Castellated nut, please help
I am about to do my turbo tie rods on my 82SC, but assume I should not reuse the castellated nut on the wheel end. Is this something I can find at my local auto store, or is it a special order item? Thanks.

I don't know... but how do the boots on the old ones look. I was just reading about the turbo tie rods on pelican and there seems to be an unusually high amount of boot failure after about a year. mine have failed. Makes me wonder if the upgrade is worth it.

I haven't heard about that problem Mike. But now I'll be on the lookout for it. I need tie rods anyhow, so figured the turbo ones were the way to go.

The problem is I purchased my tie rods from a local Porsche dealer using the $100 PMNA gift coupon and it wasn't a "kit" per se, rather just rods. The parts guy said it was all that was available and there was no kit. So I had to order boots, spacers..etc, just forgot to order the nuts and it didn't come with them. By the time this is all said and done I'll just order online from places like Pelican and Paragon, the local dealer is always a let down. I'll head to the local auto store to try to get something to fit. Thanks.

P-on - I think the reason for the castellated nut with the cotter pin is it provide additional insurance should the nut fail. I have actually seen this where the nut threads stripped over time but the cotter pin held the tie rod end in place. As turbo tie rods are solid metal, they end up absorbing a lot more vibration than the Carrera tie rods with the rubber bushings.

I would reuse the old nut, but beware that you may need a new nut.
Reason I say this is when I installed my new turbo tie rod kit, one of the NEW nuts stripped while torquing it to only 30 lb-ft. I believe this is the right spec. from memory. The rod end was fully seated in the knuckle when this happened (I wasn't using the nut to pull the rod end into the knuckle). So I had to reuse an old castle nut.
Give the old ones a try. They should be fine since they're not super tight. What you should not reuse is the cotter pin. I'm not saying i've never done this before <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> , just saying that you're supposed to replace all cotter pins!

P-on,
I'm about to do mine and should get my kit tomorrow. I'm with you: It kills me how these little things take so much time to do!
Oh well, sweat equity never comes cheap.
Good luck.

While I'm bitching, it's hard to lift that 911 on jackstands. I find my 944 easier to lift and use. I can't seem to get it high enough with the sparse jacking/holding points. Lefty, I'll keep you posted on my progress, please let me know how you do.

P-on... How much did the boots run ya? And a lazy question while I'm at it, Is changing the boots the same as changing the tie rods as far as the amount of work involved? Let me know what you find out... If you would!

In addition to still looking for the nut, I'm still looking for the *&$*^($&^ time to do the job! Will keep you posted Mike. I ordered the boots alone from Pelican for about $13 each I think.
