Default What to look for in a 81 SC

Seems too good to be true, but I found an 81 SC, that appears by the pictures, to be in great shape. Fuchs, recent clutch and a/c that works. Just had valves adjusted. All for under 10k. 115k in miles.

What do I need to look for in SCs? I owned a 911 w/2.4s and basically rebuilt it, so I do have some experience in oldy older models. SC is a new animal to me, so I've come to the experts for help or leads.

Quirks, sounds, shifting, smells, etc.? Price/value?

I don't think it has anything special like LSD or sport suspension. I'll be getting more details from the guy tomorrow when I talk to him.

To be honest I would be scared of buying an SC for that cheap.

The 1981 car us a great car. (I had one). Things that should have been done include the better clutch (non rubber hub) and absolutely, the late Carrera oil-fed chain tensioners. If that hasn't been done whoever has owned it has been cheap.

Check for sunroof operation,--if little used they can snap cables. Window regulators,--check for hesitatiion.

I would do an alignment myself to ensure that you don't have a bent suspension anywhere. That can throw off your budget.

I would not fear the price. There are 4 SC and Carrera $12,000 to 15,000, 2 are cabs, that I am on to. You seem to know enough to look at the head studs as Peter suggested. Look at the cam lobes and see if they are scratched. Do a leak down for compression. I am not sure if CArfax covers 1981, if so do one. Use your refrig magnet to see if it sticks to all the car (bondo). Make sure the door lines and hood lines are straight and even. I hope you have hit that screaming deal. good luck

Get Peter's book and you'll be armed with all the knowledge you need to be a well-informed buyer. HE is the expert!

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I think I'll see if the owner will let me take it to have a PPI done. Only decent Porche mechanic I know is about 100 miles from where the car is located. Would give me a chance to do a decent road test too.

I did not know beans about Porsches other than I always wanted one. I came across a good looking 82SC and bought it. It has been a lot of fun and very little trouble. After learning a little about them I probably would have been scared off. Sometimes you have to take a chance. I’m glad I did.
