Default Is this a good deal?

Hello All,
I have been out of the Porsche game since I sold my 951 years ago. Have been dabbiling in Vettes for a while but have come across a nice deal on a 911 and was wondering what you guys thought....
1986 Carrara. 120k miles, not a drop of oil leaked or burned. Sunroof coupe, drk blue with tan interior. All stock except for B&B muffler. Interior is mint, exterior is also mint with the usual paint chips on the front and mirrors.
Everything works except the headlight squirters, cruise control and the a/c is cold but not freezing cold. 2 owners, clean car fax, no body work that I can see ever done.
I am tradeing him a 77 Vette and some cash to equal about $13500.
Let me know what you think
Thanks for the help, I look forward to being back in the forum!
Jimbo

Love those cars

I think it's a very decent deal if the PPI checks out.
If you're not getting a PPI it's too much of a gamble. Engine rebuilds tend to be expensive.

Good luck, and welcome back!

I would suggest that you make sure that the 86 is what you want. Perhaps getting Peter Zimmerman's book 'the used 911 story' to understand the differences in each model year. Also if you are going to get a carrera try to test drive both a 915 and a G50 carrera and see which you like best.

If the PPI shows no big issues, 13500 is a good price for a car that is aesthetically good as you describe.

Don't get hung up on the 915 vs G50 tranny, that doesn't apply if you've found a good Carrera for this price.

Dedra Wires had a '77 Vette and that girl was fast. It would be a hard trade, but I'd take the Carrera. At that price you have some room for the little things that may come up.

I've got a '86 coupe, and agree with above. Except I would say $13.5K is a very good buy (assuming nothing major shows up on PPI). I'd jump on it, and don't look back.

Thanks for all the replies! The Vette is awesome and I love american muscle but have always wanted a porshe 911 for years. I have done plently of research, I know about the years and differences. I know what to look for. I am not taking to a PPI but have gone threw the car. Any work done on the car will be done by me or my buddies shop so I am not worried about that.
Thanks again.

Do you have a complete set of records? If the car has gone 120K without a top engine rebuild, one could possibly needed sometime soon.

There is a bunch of records from the previous owner. Nothing about a top end rebuild but the think is spotless under the hood, not a drip of oil and everything looks new! I know that doesnt mean anything but its not a smoker, not a dripper and not a ticker either.
Very smooth running and driving.

I had a 78 Vette for 13 years and sold it and got my 81 SC. In my opinion if the P car checks out good grab her. I have never missed the Vette. They just cant be compared.

Jimbo, I have owned Corvettes......now I don't. Last year I sold both '70 L46 cars, matching bla, bla, bla.
There is nothing for the price, that a person can buy in the automotive world that is much fun as a 80's 911.
My favorite is an '86 coupe.

120k is nothing on a carrera that's been properly cared for - in contrast - a 1977 vette is going to sqeak and rattle at 120k miles. I would think a $13500 car - 1986 w/120k miles would not last long - even in this "non-recession"

My 77 Vette is my daily summer driver, and its a blast. Yes she squeaks and rattles and is like riding on a piece of plywood. Oh yeah, its only got 70k original miles on it. Its a great car for what it is but its gas mileage is not that great also for a 4spd car.
What are you guys getting for MPG? Its wont affect my decision but it wont hurt it either.
thanks
Jimbo
