My '87 911 came with the factory sound system, namely a Blaupunkt Reno Monterey. The model noted on the face plate is SQR 46. I can't get any sound out of the unit. I have tried both AM and FM bands without any success. The tape player accepts the tape but does not play any sound, just static. Do these units require frequent repair? What about the window antenna? Can I check anything before I replace or repair the unit?

You may want to check the condition of your speakers. My car's original owner never replaced the speakers in 19 years and the cones where all but gone. When I got the speakers replaced front and back I found the wires under the dash to be very loose. Some cleaning and wiggling got it up and running. the pins to remove the unit can be purchased from Performance Products. The unit its self, I'd bet, is a good one. try pounding on the dash.......

So I managed to get the radio and cassette player functioning by wiggling the wires leading to the back of the stereo. But after about five minutes it stopped again. I'm thinking I should remove the stereo and check the terminals. I noticed that there are four round holes in each of the corners of the stereo face. Inside the stereo bag I have a small plastic bag with a small plastic toothpick like object which fits inside the hole. I'm wondering if this is the pin needed to remove the stereo? The sound is actually decent considering the age of the speakers and the equipment!

You are almost home. the pins will allow you to pull the unit out for cleaning and wiggling. You may want to use some dielectric grease on the terminals. Keep going, it's a great sterio.

I only have one pin. I inserted the pin into the small hole but nothing happened. Perhaps I must apply more pressure? I don't want to break anything...
