Default Porsche 911 purchase

Looking to purchase my first 911. Namely a 1989 Cabriolet Silver Anniversary Edition. It is a Canadian car with just over 100k km. Just curious as to what these special edition cars were all about (including the difference in a Commemorative Edition). I will be needing a PPI but am wary at the difference in prices between shops. What should I be using to determine how thorough a PPI I need? How many hours should a good PPI for these car entitle? Any pointers for what is most important to watch for in the G50 3.2 cars? Looking forward to finally being a Porsche owner!

Welcome aboard! For info on the '89 Anniversary Editions (and also the '88 CEs), I suggest going over to Pelicanparts.com and doing a search using each "Anniversary Edition" and "Commemorative Edition" as your search arguments, and you will find several threads that discuss each (sometimes in the same thread) model. They really aren't all that special IMO, other than being G50 Carreras, which is special enough , as both are really only cosmetic packages (for the most part). Good luck with your purchase!

As to what to watch for, the biggie is excessive oil consumption, which can indicate premature "worn valve guides" that typically appears on a small subset of cars in the 60-80K mileage range. Both of these boards contain a wealth of information in the archives, and the search engine is your friend, but feel free to ask questions...LOTS of extremely knowledgable folks (I'm not one of those ) on both boards are eager to help others out.

Where in Canada are you located, where is the car located. There are a bunch of us around that can probably give you a hand or recommend a place to get your PPI done.

We are on the West Coast in BC in the Lower Mainland but the car is located in the Okanagan/ Kelowna area.

Forgot to ask about fuel and oil recommendations. What brand and grade of fuels do you guys use up here? Also what grade of oil and brand recommendations? I'm leaning towards Mobil 1 but that is just a personal preference. I recall Peter Zimmermann recommending Kendall products. Cheers.

Oh God....you didn't just ask what type of oil to use did you?

Well for fuel I recommend you just use Shell V-power or perhaps other premiums. As for oil, well that is a can of worms and a big debate that has been going on for a while. You can feel free to go ahead and read this 1000 post thread on oil if you are bored. It has been a topic that has been discussed to death but never reached a true conclusion, just well educated opinions.

What is the minimum octane for these cars; 91, 92 or 94?

I'm close to where the car is. I'm not sure who could do a ppi in Kelowna but you can try Riversyde Auto in Kamloops. They look after most of the Porsche's in town. Weissach in Vancouver is very good too. Driving the car to Kamloops would be a good opportunity to get to know it a bit. Not too far to go as you probably know.
I use Chevron which has 94 octane. Also, as a fairly new Porsche owner, I can't say enough about the information you can get from this forum. It's answered a lot of my questions and has been a huge resource.

With the changes in oils lately, Kendall (aka ConocoPhillips now) is just another oil. The old Kendall wells are owned by American Refining, aka Brad Penn Racing Oil. I use Brad Penn 20-50, but they have 2 different versions of the 20-50 too. Lots of info, you can check out lnengineering.com for more info on Porsche oils for the older cars.
