I am considering buying a 1986 911 loaded. Engine rebuilt is all I know. I am buying from a dealer. Is there any known issues with these cars. I am a 928 owner and adding this to my collection.

It might by worth calling the previous owner. The dealer may have the number or you can get the VIN and conduct a registration check with the DMV. Most Porsche owners like to talk about their cars.

In addition, a PPI from a good shop is advised. These older 911's can eat you alive if any major issues appear after you buy it. Expect some small problems, it's inevitable with any older vehicle but keep in mind that even minor Porsche parts can be pricey. If you know of any issues prior to purchase you can use them as a bargaining chip to perhaps arrange a better deal. Alsi, if you are considering an after market warranty be sure to read the fine print before signing up. Some of the prerequisites for a claim can be outrageous ( ie; documented oil change with a specific brand every 2k miles, only certain components in an assembly are covered, etc) My 2 cents worth...

I've had an '86 for 7 years now...
- I'd get definition on what they mean by "engine rebuild". What's been replaced. Bottom end on these is very strong an durable, but when they did the top you should have 'raceware" head studs, valve guides, rings, a valve grind etc.
- if it's got enough miles to rebuild, they should have done the sliders in 915 tranny to improve the 1-2 shift an dput in a new clutch disc while they had everything out.
- You may want do the shifter bushings ( <$100 parts, 3-4 hours of your own labor), this will help the shift quality.
- Cylinde Head temp sensors go bad ( again <$100, 3-4 hours of PITA labor).
- get a spare DME relay ($50).
Actually a much simpler and easier car to work on than the 928 I believe.
Good luck, you'll enjoy it.

If I was seriously considering buying a 928 I would have a person or shop that was thoroughly familiar with them to go over it with a fine tooth comb. A 911 can eat you alive just like a 928 will. They just chew differently.
