Default How do you check the CO% on an 83SC??

I have an CO analyzer that I use on a 280SL to adjust fuel injection mixture.\
The 83SC has an O2 sensor plus the CAT....so how do I adjust mixture when the O2 sensor is trying to compensate my adjustments and the CAT might be
changing the CO exaust. Do I disconnect the 02 wiring... is there a preCAT plug to drop the sensor? Actually, I have removed the CAT in my car...but just wondering what you do if you had one.

Thanks,
abe

Without a cat the whole deal is moot - check it out the pipe with the oil temp hot (176F +)... If your O2 sensor is functional disconnect it at the plug in the engine compartment before making adjustments.

Thanks....so the CAT must be installed and the O2 deactivated.

No, what Pete meant was that you don't need to use the pre-cat exhaust test port to check emissions since there is no cat, just use the tailpipe and disconnect O2 sensor.

..I don't remember the company that sells it, I must have paid about $170+/-.

Well, I found were I bought it from...autoexpertproducts in Florida. They are now $250. However, do a search because I see them advertised for less.

Might be a Gunson CO meter.

Check the internet for sources.

I spoke to my friend at the BMW shop and he said they had a CO analyzer but didn't even know if that thing even works anymore. He said he remembered using it in 1983 on his motor cycle. With out necessary emmissions testing no one uses them anymore. I could use the method of setting the screw with the duty cycle of the o2 sensor but there is something wrong with my o2 sensor system so If I do that then the car won't cold start because it goes out so lean. I guess at this point I don't really see it worth buying one unless it is real cheap. I have seen some cheap meters that give results in ppm so you would just have to find out how to convert to % to be able to use it.

Is there a sticker in the engine bay that explains how to set the CO% or is there only one for the ignition timing?

the one i used gave AFR and it was a very simple conversion . it was a hand held unit and was very good. don't remember the brand though , i adjusted the screw on the air lift plate ( sorry I don't know the correct terminology )in samll increments and was able to see it move on the meter , also stored it and gave a read out , very cool stuff if you are into playing. I did this after my airbox replacement and it smoothed out the idle and made starting a breeze.

I have the Gunson's professional gastester, works great. Just picked it up at a swap meet. If anyone is local you're welcome to borrow it.

I checked the sticker under the lid for the engine bay and it does have the information for the C0% adjusting on it.
