915 trans in genneraly good condition. Poped out of 2nd during acceleration ( I must have had slight pressure on the stick before I hit the clutch). Now I cannot get into 2nd. Its as if it's not there no gate to get into. All other gears work fine.
Would this likely be a linkage issue? (I hope)
The fact that it still goes into first makes that seem unlikely.
Any ideas?
thanks

When this happened to me, it was the bushings in my linkage that broke apart. $15.00 later and I was back in business. Mind you, my mechanic told me that all my syncros are also gone, so I will have to fix my tranny soon. My symptoms were that it seemed like second gear and reverse were just gone. No matter how hard I tried to push into second gear, there was nothing to grab my shifter. It just settled back into neutral.

If anyone needs a rebuilt 915 let me know. We have several in stock, I am sure that we could work out some sort of gearbox exchange so that you are not without your P-car for more then a few hours. We rebuild these all the time too, if anyone needs that done. Just FYI, hope I can help in the future.

I'm in the same boat. I figure while I'm in there I may as well do the following:
-Add LSD
-Add WEVO gateshift
-Replace gears (Shorter)
-fix all the busted stuff
I'm budgeting $6000-$8000

Ernie,
For a stock gearing 8:31 ring and pinion aluminum case 915 gearbox with open differential, we charge $2,495 plus $1,000 core fee which of coarse is returned once your core is recieved. The core must have a good ring and pinion in order to be acceptable. Our gearboxes come with a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty, and are of the best quality. We Temp paint the exteriors Silver with Black offset, which while you never actually see this once the gearbox is installed, does make for a nice grease free installation.
Let me know if you want me to post some pics of our work here. Also if you have any questions I would be happy to talk to you in person. Feel free to call me or send me your phone number and I will give you a ring.
Warmest Regards all,
Erik Johnson

Typical parts replaced during the rebuild would be bearings, dogrings, synchros, forks (if needed), and all gaskets and seals.

Trog,
Opinions vary on this, but I would recommend against the Wevo Gate shift. They are really expensive and not exactly a snap to install and fit. I would recommend going to a different shifter assy, they are much less expensive and will certainly help your issue. In terms of shorter gearing, you might want to consider a 7:31 ring and pinion, and see if that will lower your entire stack enough for your be comfortable with. This again might save you some money, however if you still wish to change gearing let me know, we have quite a selection of 901, 915, G50, 993, and 996 gears in stock and I would be happy to put a gearing chart together for you. LSD wise, there are a couple of options, there is the ZF (stock) which is fine for street if you do not drive too much, or there are a couple of aftermarket options as well. The one that I recommend if your budget allows for it is the Guard Transmission Differential. It is still the best one made, but not cheap. There is another option that would be less expensive, as well.
Give me a call if you have any questions. I know you did not ask for my .02 cents, but I like to type so now you have it. Oh yeah, I love my job too, so whenever I see that there is something that I might be able to help with, I try. Happy driving all.

Jes1680: Check the bushings in the shifter-housing and the linkage undr the plate behind the seats first. Those plastic bushings are funky at best ... and in a 25-year-old car, they could have gone away on you. You might also have a bad shifter, too. That happened to a friend's '84 Carrera.
After rebuilding my trans, I went ahead and invested in a WEVO shifter for my '83-SC. The stock shifters, even with fresh bushings, are still a little funky. The WEVO's are much more concise from gear to gear, IMHO.
Yeah, $600 is a lot, but the $2500 trans rebuild was a lot more, and I don't want to revisit that expreience in the near future.
I'm hoping you've dodged a bullet, and it's the shifter or bushings. On the other hand, a fresh 915 feels like nothing else.
Good Luck!

I know this has been brought up before...but how can you honestly claim $2,500 for a "rebuilt" 915 when it would cost $4,000 or more to do the work ourselves? Can you break down exactly what you do and what parts are replaced with new parts?
Not trying to bust any ***** here...I am just a little in the dark perhaps on prices. I have read tons of articles on rebuilding a 915, and no where have I seen the costs that low for a properly rebuilt 915.
