Default Interest in Larger Fuchs?

Is there interest out there in larger Fuchs alloys? Something like what Mike Lindsey does in 17 inch,--but single piece, and forged, and that looks just like the classic Fuchs? Or 18 inch, also single piece forged in the same pattern?

A friend is starting up a company that will be manufacturing Fuchs alloys,--again. They will use the similar manufacturing methods that the original Fuchs alloys were made to,--forging and then CNC work on the cut outs, etc.

They hope to have about 5 different wheels out soon. Their first interest is supporting the 997 and 996 customers, and then picking up the 993, 964 and older 911 customers. I think the problem these days is finding tire manufacturers who will build a good high performance tire in an older size like a 15 or 16 inch. This might solve that problem. And it's going to LOOK just like a Fuchs. (He has secured the trademark rights to "Fuchs," as well).

Stand by this channel for more info!

The Rotas are cast not forged.

I understand that.

And after rereading the original post I see that it is a requirement. Time for me to read more and post less........

I definitely am interested. I think 17's look amazing on these cars if they are done right and fuch copies would look outstanding.

Jeff Alton over at Pelican is in the final stages of this - 17 and 18" forged fuch copies. High quality - if Jeff is doing them - they will be done right.

Alton's aren't one-piece wheels. The upside of this is that they're more flexible in terms of fitting them to cars that require different offsets. The only downside is that there will be some (barely-visible) hardware.

New, 17-inch (and 18-inch) one-piece forged Fuchs are a great idea. But I'm puzzled as to why you'd start with the 996/997 market. I can't imagine why ownrs of cars with a 1990's design would be all that hungry for 1960's-styled wheels. As the original Fuchs age and crack (and tire availability in 15- and 16-inch diameters evaporates), it would seem to make the most sense to make 1965-89 offsets first. It's the one thing all the players in this game so far (Lindsey Racing, Trudesign, Rota and Alton) seem to agree on.

Putting these on any 911 design later than the 1989 models will have some novelty appeal, I guess. But it's hard to imagine the line to get them being very long.

(My two cents.)

Jack, I may be reading into the statement wrong, but what I am getting from this post is...This company will be making new style wheels for the newer cars first...then once they get settled in and are doing well in that market, they will then start working their way down the line until they get to the pre-89 cars to start making the Fuch style. This would be the only thing that would make since...definitely not making fuch style wheels for 997/996 cars. Blehh!

To be honest I would love to be able to stay with 16" wheels because I feel they look best on the older cars. 17" look good but once you start getting larger than that they start looking way out of place on a pre-89 car.

I personally would love to just have a pair of 16x9's.

Any pics of the 17's or 18's on 89 or older Carrera out there?

Have a 993 and still miss the simplicity of the Fuchs I had on my 1986 3.2.

Would definitely consider them for the 993 provided:

1. Correct factory offsets

2. Confirmation that they'd accomodate big brakes (Reds?)

3. Seeing that they look "right" on the later cars

4. Build details - anodized rims? Finish customization offered?

5. Pricing

Great idea through!

Keep us posted - may want to gauge interest on the late model boards to see what the rest think...

Cheers!

I'm actually first in line for Jeff's new creations.

Jeff's wheels will look very much like 1 piece wheels. They've got a nice method of using a blind fastening system.

As to the old arguement of whether larger wheels look right on pre-89's, I agree that 18's look too big. I'm not a fan of large offset wheels on early cars either. But 17's look OK, IMO, and the reason for many to consider larger wheels than 16's are:

1. Clearance over 4 piston calipers-My BBS 16's work, but I'm not going to pay extreme prices for 951 8" Fuchs in front and 9" in the rear. Prices are thru the roof, and too many examples of purchases that were not as expected in the used market.

2. Tire selection. 16's are getting slimmer and slimmer with regard to choices. 17's even are marginal in some cases.

Between the Rotas that were sold recently, and now Jeff's forged wheel, much of the pent up need for such an animal will be satisfied, at least for now.
