Question intermittent charging light

I have a 1976 911s 2.7. When the outside temperature is cold, the alternator light will come on and stay on until the entire engine compartment has been warmed up. This does not occur during the summer, only in late fall and winter. According to the wiring diagrams that I have, the car also has a "warm up regulator." Does anyone have an idea what is causing the charging system to act in such a fashion (the system is not charging when the light is on; sometimes the light is a bright red and sometimes it is a dull red)?

I had the exact car/problem but it did it warm and cold.I ended up replacing the alternator and voltage regulator and the problem went away.
