I asked, pointly, why were putting up with the problems of importing oil when we had oil here. The answer was----- "WE WANT TO USE UP THEIRS FIRST".

and that dear children, is how the cow ate the cabbage.
Not buying it. The restraints are internal, namely in the guise of "environmental" blather and the political opposition of green types preventing the further utilization of EXISTING resources. There IS oil on US turf; there IS the capability to build new refineries (though we are verrrry late on this, arguably too late); there IS existing technology in clean coal and nuke plants to easy relax the dependency on petroleum.

Moreover, our dependency on foreign oil is < 1/3 IIRC, compared to some in europe or asia where they are in the real sense "dependent" ...last I recall Japan was >60%. Add to this, our dependency on mideast oil is ~11% ...this is hardly "crippling" our country.

No conspiracy theory or black helicopters. It's about politics constraining capability. What we have in this generation is rhetoric for "solutions" and no political will or testicular fortitude to DO what we need to do ...safely, responsibly, and dare I say profitably.

BTW, Saudis subsidize their fuel costs for their popl., as do other "command-type" economies. Not an apple to apple comparison.

I think everything you say here is true. You left out increase in the water supply (new dams), and building new elec generating plants. Not to mention the criminal depletion of the underground water supplies. However, the green was lit up by the Santa Barbra offshore well blow out and the Valdez 1989,( just now getting to the US Supreme court). Nuke had a bad day here and in the USSR. Nevermind that tech advances make all of the above unlikely to replay.

However, as the industries of various types have been restrained and some have left say- California for more realistic ground, oil and coal have also been left alone because of enviro pressure. But, notice the oil industry has not been super agressive in expanding the US resources or refining. Green has an agend, oil has a similar agenda. Both for different reasons, but the end results meets both needs-- no drilling, no new refining on US soil. Two types of control, one for political control, one for the control of the supply of gasoline and oil. Tidy package.

Let me say that the 911 owner is a little brighter brand of bunny. Lets pay attention, listen and read. The time may come when Rennlist, PCA or POA may have to become more than just a band of car guys. The brighter people can inpact the system, and it needs to be impacted. If we can help each other fix these rather complex devices we love, yack with positive feeds of information and fun, maybe we can be watchful in having fuel to race and drive for enjoyment--- as well as needed transportation.
