OK..Thanks very much everyone for the advise. I'm remote (by about 1500 miles) from my personal tool bench, but I can buy a VOM, timing light for spark detection and a set of craftsman tools this a.m. I'll check for spark, check for power at the fuel pump, and do a search on DME relay connections and jumper the DME. I had previously checked the alarm system to see if it was active and the result was negative. If I don't have power to the fuel pump, I will try to work the problem backwards from the pump. Do we have much of the schematics on line, by chance? At least the interconnection of the alarm system, and other relays like the fuel pump relay?

Hmmm.....It started this a.m., although it began stumbling and hunting at idle. Driving it up the street and back was possible, but not without nursing the accelerator. This seems suspiciously like water contaminated gas, and while making the connection between the 4 inches of water on the roads last night and this issue is tempting; I have to think that if water cold find its way into the tank, then fumes could find their way out...and I can smell none. I can only suspect that some of this gas has been in the tank for months. I wil put a pint of gas dryer in the tank regardless.

I totally know what you mean. After driving my 928 on a 4000 mile drive home from San Francisco, it began quitting on me until I found the loose LH-Jetronic power connection. That was a year ago and flat beds still seem like a road going flop house. We're driving back in this car. "Familiarity" is just starting sooner than I expected. This is just a real reminder not leave unprepared.

Will do....are you a U.S. sponsor? I'm going to be looking for a relay on 2-day delivery.

But yes, always suspect the DME relay. It is such a simple cheap fix.

Default trip home thwarted solved

OK.....couple of things:
1) The problem was deja vu my trip home from San Francisco last year. I eventually developed LH-jet missing in action problems owing to my not having inspected the battery post and cable connections, one of which was loose. Similarly, the a/c service center disconnected and failed to positively reconnect the pos cable on my son's 911 yesterday, and it lifted from the post with just my fingers when I checked it this a.m. What a hero I would have been if I had checked it before towing last night.
2) I will determine the pin out on the DME relay and have jumper cables ready before we leave tomorrow. I will also determine what functions depend on relays similar to the fuel pump relay in case we have to "borrow" a relay on the trip. I hope the DME relay pinouts are posted by our indispensible rennlisters. Thanks for the advise...it will not go to waste.

The DME relay is unique. Reach under the driver's seat front & it is attached to the floor with a screw & plugged into a harness that goes to the DME - the silver box further under the seat.

Part # 911-618-154-00-M252

Maybe you can find one along the way.

Dealers might actually stock this. Any garage that works on that vintage of 911 should have a few.

# 2 Above. Sorry, it's beside the DME. As old man said, check with dealers or any Porsche specialist along the way.
