Default How NOT TO TEST your Jack and Jackstands....

While installing my turbo tie rods, which by the way works great, I wanted to unlock the steering wheel and so I accidentally turned the ignition on while the car was in first gear. Luckily, I had two stands plus two jacks...so four points in the front for security. Things shock a little...few inches forward and back...but it held. I felt more secure going under the car after that.
Sooo, no matter how careful you are....**** happens. I got lucky this time.

Near misses like this are good to hear. We all learn how better to be safe. Glad to hear it didn't come crashing down.

I'll make this quick. High school autoshop about 1984 my teacher come flying across the classroom/shop with a huge pocket knife screaming like a wild banchee. Every one in the shop stopped and looked to see the teacher dive under the hood of a car and cut a kid free from a fan belt. One kid was working under the hood and another was wanting to listen to the radio inside the car and tapped the key just enough to almost cause the other to loose a finger. We never figured out how the teacher knew nor did we ever see the two kids again. After that it was one car, one kid.

And many still wonder why in most manuals the first or second thing they recommend is disconnecting the battery

"Near Misses" are what I like to see at the beach on a hot day, rather than experience up close and personal...alone with my car, that is.

I really am in the habit of always leaving my 911 in neutral when I park it, so this type of scenario won't happen.

I use wood blocks with multiple points of suspension + throw a removed wheel under the frame.

And usually leave the factory jack in place.

The closest I have ever come is wife turned on ignition key when I was 'looking' under a hood. I usually hide the keys...

Went to a funeral last month....good friend...25 years in the automotive business...owned his own shop. He was always safety conscious and made me move back several times when I was looking over his shoulder as he worked on my car...... He was working on a friend's big 4 X 4 that the guy "just brought by" to his house over the weekendto have him check out something that was wrong with the tranny....just one of those dive under it real quick and check it out....slight incline to the driveway and somehow the truck slipped out of park as he was manipulating the linkeage underneath and it rolled over him and crushed his ribcage....he died on the spot. I only post this as a reminder...not to solicit angry comments about how dumb he was or how he shoulda' otta' done this or that.....he's dead...that's the lesson....that's the reminder.

After that incident...I'm under my car today cleaning up the engine compartment prior to reinstalling the engine tomorrow...and I have jackstands, rubber wheel chocks under the front tires, and an additional 2 X 10 up on blocks all the way across the bottom of the tub....maybe a bit of an excess....but Larry's death has me being doubly cautious. I can't believe that after 25 years in the industry...as safety conscious as he was....it's always that sort of spontaneous "This isn't going to take me that long" sort of event that results in tragedy. Be safe guys...take a little extra time to install jackstands....Larry didn't and he ran out of time.

Wow, Chuck. So sorry to hear about your friend. My goodness ...my deepest condolences to you and his friends/family. Thank you for that reminder as I am always put in that position of "hey, can you take a quick look at this..." for friends and family. That is truly sobering ...and I too am VERY safety conscious, but can easily recall those times where I take a shortcut. Perhaps I need to think more carefully about that.

Edward
