Post Exhaust Bolts

Does anyone know the size and type of bolts used to attach a muffler to an 84 Carrera? I'm hoping I can buy them locally rather than ordering them and paying more for shipping than the bolts. Thanks.

I just go to my local true value hardware store and pick up hardened bolts of the right length and width. Don't need to order anything special.

Scottb, Bill Gregory is correct. Go To nearest hardware store and get "hardened" bolts. I would take one of the old ones for a master. In 34 years of driving Porsches, I've never bought from the catalog for nuts, bolts , etc. I recently redid mine with bolts from an Ace hardware store.

I know nothing about metric bolts, so please forgive me if this is a silly question. I've seen metric bolts marked "M10" and "M8". Does that have anything to do with hardness?

Thanks.

The "M" refers to the diameter of the bolt shaft in millimeters. Thus an M10 bolt is a metric bolt with a thread (not hex head) diameter of 10 millimeters. SAE-sized bolts are fractional sizes (e.g. 5/16", 1/2", 9/16", etc.). Both metric and SAE bolts are offered in fine and coarse thread pitches (the number of threads/inch).

Rather than specifying hardness, the correct term is "strength". Markings on the bolt head tell you what strength specification the bolt was built to (or was suppose to have been built to). Depending on the source, not all equally-graded bolts are the same.

For exhaust fasteners, metric grade 8.8 should be fine.

Hi:
normal factory bolts are 8mmx40mm long. I went with 316 stainless steelbolts, and decided to use silicon/bronze nuts to avoid galling , as would occur if using stainless nuts against bolts. Used 5/16" bolts, partially threaded, hex head, 16 pitch I believe, 1 1/2" long. almost an exact duplicate of factory except for material. Nice touch...the 1/2" heax head can be used with metric 13 mm wrench.
