Post Bursch Muffler

I'm considering replacing the stock muffler on my 84 with a Bursch. I'm not looking for performance improvement. All I want is to change the sound of the car to a lower, more throaty sound, but not so loud that I wake up the neighbors and set-off car alarms. Any thoughts on the Bursch would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Scott,

You may want to go to a Porsche event, autocross or track, for example, to listen to other mufflers. There are lots of opinions, however, what sounds "nice" to me may send others grabbing their children and running for cover

I have no first hand experience with Bursch mufflers. Hopefully, someone with first hand experience can give their opinion.

I have a Danske sport muffler on my '84 911 (one in, one out) and the sound is great...like a sports car should be. Not raspy or harsh, just a deep mellow rumble (neighbors and wife can still sleep ).

Had a Bursch sport muffler on my 911SC, I liked it, the neighbors and wife didn't. Went back to a stock muffler picked up at a swap. Now it's for sale $50 plus shipping about 8000 miles on it.

Which is for sale, the Bursch? If so, I'm interested if it'll fit an 88 3.2

I have a Bursch on my 83SC with a cat by-pass and I really love it, great sound and a couple of extra horses is very good for what you pay, I have heard the Bursch on an 84 911 and liked it also.I am no big fan of the stock sound so anything is an improvement.I made my choice based on money, I would have gone with the Dansk dual out if I had the money, but for the money the Bursch does the job.

I have a Bursch on my 75 2.7 with SSI's. I love the sound but I wouldn't call it a low throaty sound. Its kind of a raspy sound at high revs. Your neighbors would hate it, mine do. But I try to keep the rpm's low until I get out of the neighborhood. Then I open her up and it sounds great!

Based on the last posting, as well as what I've heard from others, I think I'm going to go with the Dansk OEM-style sport muffler. It will retain the original look, but will add some throatiness. It's the best of both worlds.

I put a bursch on I think it sounds great. Much better than stock IMO, and I'm not one of these guys that loves the Monster Truck straight pipe.

I had them all. I even used 3 different types of Bursch units when I used to have SSI's. I thought the Bursch was decent for the price, but not the most durable for the long term. I liked the B&B a bit more, but it had durability problems also. I had a single in/single out Borla with a standard big outlet that sounded better and lasted well for as long as I owned it. I also had a Monty single in/single out with 4 inch outlet that sounded amazing with a cat bypass. It was very neat looking with a rounded main silencer body. That one sounded the best, though the Borla was very close. The sound on the Dansk is quite good too and not too loud. The fit on the Dansk is obviously perfect since the dimensions are exactly the same as the stock unit. I now run a gutted standard muffler which sounds very good, is extremely light, makes great power, but is way too loud for most people when run with a cat bypass.

If I sound picky about sound, that is because I am. Just louder and more agressive isn't enough for me. I don't like things too high pitched and or too low pitched. I am one of those guys that can tell the difference in the sound of a 935/76 and 935/77 from a mile away. When I had SSI's, I was never quite satisfied with the sound (power also) since it sounded too low displacement for my tastes. Unless I ran with just megaphones and no mufflers. In that configuration, it sounded exactly like a 3.0 rsr. Way too loud for street though. Any muffler I tried on the SSI's sounded too peaky for me. That is because of the 2 inlet configuration. As far as Bursch units on the stock heat exchangers, they sounded ok but not the best. The Monty was tops, since with a cat bypass it sounded like a 3.3 911 turbo with a performance muffler. Very deep with the burbling on the overun and all. The only difference in sound in comparison to a 930 was the lack of turbo sound. Again, Borla is very close to that sound and most people would not be able to tell the difference. And maybe GHL too, though I haven't tried it yet. I have had B&B units go bad on me in the past, even though they sounded great, so I don't know. Maybe they have improved their quality. As far as Dansk, they are gems that fit perfectly and sound good too.

I bought a Bursch for my 79 SC when I was restoring the car. I loved the sound but found that it really got inside my head with the resonance at 3000 to 3500 rpms, right where you would probably run it most of the time. It drove me nuts after a very short period of time and I replaced it with a Dansk stainless factory type muffler (single inlet-single outlet) and I am much, much happier with the sound. It is more mellow and does not resonate and IMHO is a better muffler for an everyday street driven car. I have the Bursch and would be willing to get rid of it for $75.00. It only has about 3 hours of running on it. Try to find one to listen to while driving if possible.
The other issue with the Bursch is that it hangs down further in the back and is much more visible from the rear. Didn't like that either. Good luck.
