Default 3.2 in a 1977 911s (smog question)

I'm considering the purchase of a '77 with a 3.2 conversion sourced from a 1989 carrera. The engine is bone stock complete with cat, stock intake, ecu, etc. It's an out of state car and I need to register it in Calif. My understanding is that if the newer engine has all its original smog equipment and it passes the sniff test then a Referee will issue a sticker and from then on the car will be smogged as an '89. Have any of you done this in CA? I've heard that "all original emissions equipment" could be a broad enough description to include the later model fuel tank and assoc. venting system, instrumentation to include "check engine light" etc. I believe 1989 was not yet cursed by OBD? This car has a real clean install but I don't want to get hosed by "The Man". If you've been down this road please share your experience! Thanks.
