Post Oil

I've have a question about my 76 with standard
front oil cooler. How many quarts of oil does it take?I thought it was 9.5,but the owners manual which I have for the car which is for a
75 states 13.5 ???? I owned a 71 for 18yrs and that was 9.5 quarts.I just did a oil change and only put in 8.5.What is the right amount?

I have a 76S with a 78SC motor, but when I had the 2.7 motor in the car, I use to have to put 12-13 quarts in it. I don't have a fender cooler so you should require more since the cooler will store some oil in it. Check you oil level with the motor at normal operating temp and at idle. The oil reservoir dipstick should show your level at mid-way between the marks.

You shouldn't have to add any more oil if you have a cooler unless you somehow drained said cooler and lines.

When the engine is warm and idling how is the oil level on the dip stick?

I looked in the factory manual, and didn't see any oil capacity info for the 1976 model. A European reference shows for the 1976 German model 13L oil capacity. For comparison, the 1971 German model showed 9L oil capacity.

Actually I looked last night, my owners manual states 2.64 gallons which should be about 10.5qts.The haynes manual said 13.5.I'll get it idling tommorow and check the dipstick.Took a short ride on sunday got it up to 100,hope I didn't hurt the engine with 8.5 instead of 10.5.Also is it normal to hear gurgling on the pass. side with the oil going back and forth to the front cooler when the engine is idling. Thanks for all your responses.

Don't worry about hurting the engine as long as you maintained good oil pressure and temperature. You were fine.

Thanks for all your replies. It turns out 10.5
quarts is perfect. The oil is between the min & max on the dipstick and at the halfway mark on the gauge.

A little gurgling is a good thing. That means your thermostat is working and therefore your fender oil cooler is doing its job. I got a bunch of gurgling when I first ran the car after pulling the motor. Kinda uneasy feeling, no?
