Default Driver's Window won't go up or down

I have look using search thread but can't seem to find a good thread.

Here is the problem:
The driver's window won't go up or down. The switch works and motor seems to work (it is making a sound) but the window is off track or there is a band that is broken. I have seen thread relating to 996 or 928's but no 911 in detail. My car is a 87 911.

Do you have any links or websites, etc.. that can show me how to open the side door window area so I can take a look?

Thanks

Bentley manual has some good pictures of how to take the door card off. There are some hidden fasteners but it is relatively simple.

it's actually pretty easy. Just take the door pocket off. I found it pretty intuitive.

remove window winder
remove topper , scew at front and back
remove cap and remove door lock ****
remove poceat , screws at very front, very back , along door pocket underneath and into armrest. unclip inside door handle lever.
undo rear bracket for flip door and remove flip door. remove door inside pull handle , armrest assm
remove front black supporting bracket for pocket.

take pocket off

done

DRACO,

I figured it out but I can't figure how to fix the problem. I took part of the door apart and the window is so tight it won't stay on the track. When I roll down the window, the window sticks and then gets off track. When going up, the track is sort of bent so that it misses the window. What would you do?

Thanks, Rice

Well, the window is up. I might have to keep that window up from now on.

Regulator / track...

I had my glass pull out of the runner at the bottom on my 84, I ended up doing $5 worth of silicone sealant in the track runner at the bottom, rather than replacing the entire regulator setup (would have to update to the cross-arm style vs. the parallel arm as its NLA, IIRC).

Anyway, if everything's smooth without the glass in, try that - can't hurt at this point, can save you $$$$. Mine's going on 2nd year this way now.

84 Carrera,

Thanks but I don't understand how the silcone sealant in the track would help. Can you explain? Unless it was to make the glass stick to the arm.

There is a brown residue on the bottom of the glass where the glass goes into the arm. Do you think there was sealant there already?

Thanks

If the glass is out of the rail / not being pulled down with the rail (if this is your issue), gluing the glass to the rail worked for me. In my case, the glass came OUT of the door The regulator worked fine up / down, but the glass needed to be attached to the bottom rail, and the silicone sealant worked. Saved me something like hundreds for the replacement regulator & any labor if I had it done elsewhere.

This is exactly my problem. That's awesome! Man, this is a great website.

I am in the process of buying this car. The owner has let me keep the car for about a week and I'm giving him the money probably tomorrow if our schedule permits. It has various problems but I want to learn how to do stuff on my own. Thanks again.

Well, if you're looking to buy the car, get a professional Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI). See Pete Zimmerman's writeup on what is inspected & how in this section somewhere. It'll cost a few hundred, but well worth it.

Also, look to the "real" cost of fixing this issue with the door window glass / regulator, perhaps it will assist in the price negotiations.

Good luck, hope the car's what you were looking for, & welcome aboard. If you like what you see here, the best compliments are becoming a dues-paying member, and returning the information you learn about your car to the next guy who comes along.

Oh, and it's THE LAW, you have to post up a photo of the car when she becomes yours for good.

84 Carrera,

Thanks for the information and I had a PPI done already which came back to my satisifaction.

I was looking over this post again and I think/know I don't have the cross arm style. I have the other in which the window is held in by a pivotal device. Do you have any suggestions with this type of window?

Also, once I have purchased the car, I do need to become a member here and @ PCA.

Thanks, Rice
