HHB,

You are clearly the good son your father raised you to be, but your plan falls just a tad short or what your fellow Rennlisters expect and, yes, require of you.

It may be harder to do this, being in the service, but barring unavoidable circumstances, here is the deal.

Before you ship out, you must ship your Porsche to California, not Florida. There you will pick it up your very self, and then drive it to Florida. You will proceed to spend all necessary time, and some additional unnecessary time teaching your father what he needs to know about driving and caring for your classic specimen. While your motivation is partly didactic, it is mostly an unstated father-son bonding thing around a shared passion.

(I wish my father and I could have restored that Model T we often talked about).

I agree it's a bad time to sell. Hang on. There will come better circumstances in which to sell, in order to get something else.

Cheers.

Brent

I can't take any vehicles with me to Korea. For that matter, the only way I won't have to live in the barracks is if I'm married AND get a command sponsership (piece of paper saying the army will pay for me to bring my wife over there), and they are sometimes tough to get.

I've done a lot more thinking about this, and I have decided to keep the car. After all, it weighs less than the 81, and the 81s have that god awful 85mph speedo. So I'll just keep mine, and one day maybe buy a spare hood so I can install the whale tail, and still have the option of returning it to stock.

Also as far as my career is concerned, I've made some decisions there also. Getting all of the above would take a good heft of luck. I've been asking around and doing some research, and I've decided that I'm going to stay here in Hawaii for probably about 1.5-2 more years, then use the ROTC program and become an officer. I figure more money, better quality of living, can't go wrong. Who knows where I'll be stationed, but at least I'll have the financial 'comfort' to feed my car addiction So yeah, I think my wife needs that shiny red 944, and I'm sure she wouldn't mind a 914/6 as a birthday present....

(on a side note, my girlfriend absolutely loves older Porsches and BMWs, so she probably would love those as presents)

I tend to think of a good idea and then ignore all other options, so I'm trying to be as open minded as possible. I would like to spend a year in Korea, but I don't think I'm going to do it. I'll just become an officer in a few years, and keep my car.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! Cheers

On a related note to my comment above, I am going to kinda 'use' my girlfriend/future wife to help feed my car addiction. She likes the same cars I do, and she LOVES the 914. So in a few months or so when I have more moolah saved up, if I find a good deal on a nice daily driver 914, I'm going to pick it up as a gift for her. And for her, I mean me

Good luck on your quest for a 914! I thought about building one so I could go autoxing, but couldn't find any.

Don't think of it as "using" her for selfish gains. No, no, no.... A good relationship and a good marriage requires compatibility, and the more areas of compatibility, the better. It seems to me you're quite a young man to already be into classic Porsche ownership. An index of your genuine love and passion. I say it would be maritally irresponsible to pick out a wife who doesn't share such an important passion, or at least sympathetic interest, as an area of compatibility.

I think your 914/916 plan is a wonderful way to enhance your relationship with your gal. And I think having a partner who shares your interest in these cars is a wonderful way to add depth and breadth to your car hobby.

This isn't selfish, unless it's selfish to want a good relationship and marriage.

Tell 'em all the Witch Doctor says so!

;-)

Happy trails. (914 -- first Porsche I ever rode in. Love 'em!)

PS, My partner doesn't like the looks of my 911. Thinks it has "bug eyes".

I think she needs some serious work. Maybe just letting her drive will do the trick.

And maybe a trade-in is in order. heheh. Oh, just joking.

Oh, my chicka loves the looks of the 911. And on top of that, she treats my car very nice (ie, always wipes her feet off before getting in, is gentle with the car, etc). When she first saw a 914 she thought it was the cutest looking thing, in fact I believe her exact words were "What is that? I love it, I want one!" So yeah, I've got a winner

Oh, and BTW I had neglected to mention:
Thank you for your service to this great nation. I commend you and your colleagues for your tremendous sacrifice to maintain our freedom. My best to you and your fellow soldiers! May you achieve your goals and come back to enjoy your 911 with joy and good health!!

Let me chime in on Ed's sentiments.

I worry that all you guys hear from Canada is our concerns about blah blah blah. Our freedom depends on your freedom and your protection, quite frankly, and many seem to have taken that for granted. I'm sick and fricken tired of the fact that Canadian's have, almost to a person, never heard the words to the song Freedom Isn't Free.

So my hat's off you the boys and gals who serve to protect our great countries.

~off my soap box now~

Don't sell it and get the collector insurance and have your dad take care of it - great advice! Collector insurance is next to nothing as the premium is based in part on the stated value - keep it low and the premium stays low. And I have a prestine 1981 928 S manual (51k miles) when you're ready!
