Default 3.0 liter rebuild questions

Friend & I just tore down a 3.0L I recently bought from Paul @ PAR, New Rochelle, NY. What we found was five broken head studs on left side, none on right. Half the cam lobes & associated rockers have pitted surfaces.

I was thinking of upgrading the power & torque output (maybe 250 HP?) with cams and improved flow. I don't wish to change compression ratio. I wish I could score an intake box with 44mm tubes.

Any suggestions as to sources for cams, head studs and gasket sets without getting too carried away?

Hi,

JHMO,.....

1) The cams can be repaired as long as the bearing surfaces are not pitted. They can also be reground with a different profile at the same time.

2) Replace ALL the studs with either 993TT Dilavars or steel ones. I think those late Dilavars are a mauch better solution.

3) New rocker arms are required.

4) You'll not see anything close to 250 HP with a 3.0 or 3.2 CIS engine but you can make some nice gains with exhaust and cam changes.

I can provide anything you need.

Factory new 964 cams run $ 1300/pr and the PS drive must be machined off to work in your cam towers.

New billet ones run $ 995/pr and having your current ones re-ground runs $ 695/pr.

JV911, you gotta change your avatar! I appreciate a fine hind shot as much as any red-blooded male, but I don't really like it stuffed in my face every time I view your post.

I got a price of $350 for a cam regrind to stock from Elgin Cams. I thought that was the price for both but I could be wrong. I found a used set for myself for $100 but I may just be lucky. Try your local PCA members. To get to your 250 horses you can buy new new pistons and cylinders and go up to 3.6 liters and still keep the CIS injection. If you want to go to a hot cam profile you are going to need to go to caburetors which will also add to your pony power. In the book "The Gold Plated Porsche" this is about what he did and he got something like $260 at the wheels. I do not recall exactly.

I made a spread sheet of prices for the parts I bought for my tranny and top-end engine repairs. I can email you the file if you want. It would be much easier to read. Vertex was generally the cheapest about 70 percent of the time. I went with plain steel studs. I have not heard of anyone with the aluminum block having a problem with this. Dilavar would have been fantastic on the magnesium cases but was not necessary for the aluminum cases.
