Default 85 MPH Speedo?

Howdy -

I noticed yesterday that my new toy has a Speedo that only goes to 85 MPH... Is this correct for an '81? I wouldn't think so, 'cause my '83 goes to 160 MPH.

Can anyone tell me which Speedo to replace it with(and where to get the correct one)?

Thanks,

Russ

I believe at minimum it should be 150 MPH face. I had mine replaced at Palo Alto Speedometer.

That was the law in the US in the early 80s. You can replace it. Palo Alto or W Hollywood Speedo are both good sources. It is original tho

Russ, as you probably know, that is the U.S. federal mandated 85mph speedometer. It was used for U.S. market vehicles for 3 year models only, 80, 81,and 82. Then in 1983, the 160mph was made the standard speedometer. If you want to have one of the 160mph models, I would save the original and look for a good used 1983-up, 160mph type. They come up on ebay a lot. Or you could go the used parts route. You might be able to locate one of them in Vegas, Henderson, or up toward the Mt.Charleston area. If you can't find it locally, I have always been happy with everything that I have bought from Oklahoma Foreign. Gary has always been great help, and super deals on the items that I needed, gauge sets, tool sets, etc. I don't remember what the phone number, but it should not be too hard for you to acquire.
How long have you been in Vegas? I used to work in and out of there many years ago. Good luck!! Tony.

...or just peg the speedo every time that you're in the car and tell your passenger it's a special way that Porsche calibrates the speedo (actually half the true speed) and impress (scare) the heck out of her.

Use Hollywood VDO. They do a great job and calibrate the speedometer to a new dial that shows 150 etc.

I kept the Killometer speedo in my 81 930 and it goes up to 300. 50=30mph 100=62mph and beyound there you are looking in the rear view mirror for cops anyway. Kind of cool to be doing 100 and still be legal.

Sadly, that was stock for 1981. Being as I modified my car a bit (turbo) I needed something more effective. I found that that the 150 mph speedo looked nice, but I would often peg it. I wound up with the VDO 170 mph one and then was happy! (Never went above 162--I swear, officer!)

Why not keep the original? I think it's kind of cool... besides I'm sure you wouldn't really need more than 85mph, right?

+1 for keeping it original.
It is a conversation piece and may end up adding value to a completely stock example.

Default My '80 SC still has the 85 mph speedo ---

I thought about replacing it with the 150 mph version but decided that, if I'm over 85, the speedo is the last thing I should be looking at.
