For an '87 Carrera with 7/9 x16"s today (street tire stuff), I'm looking for spare wheels for DE driving. While I was in search of 16"ers, I've seen a few 17"s advertized as good for '87 Carreras (with lower profile tires I suspect). Can anyone comment that 17"s would be alright or that some rubbing was experienced. Thank you. Dan

As long as stock o/s and rim widths are retained there will be no issues. If non stock o/s or overly large tires are used there will be issues commensurate w/ the degree of deviation from stock.
As an an example Bridgestone SO-3 205/55x16 normally a front Carrera tire has a ~dimensions of 24.9x8.4 a comparable 17 would be a 215/45 with dimensions of 24.6x8.5(slightly shorter and wider) as long as the rim o/s is ~+23mm there will be no fitment problems. For the same brand of tires a typical rear is a 245/45x16 with dimensions of 24.6x9.6, a comparable 17 is the 255/40 w/ dimensions of 25.1x10.4(wider and taller) again there will be no fitment issues. A better match for this rear is a 225/45x17 w/ dimensions 25x9( there will be no fitment issues on most cars).
With lots of additional work sizes up to 245/40x17 front and 275/40x17 rear can be utilized.

Dan,
I've use 17" TUV rated Cup replicas for DE. They work fine. I chose to roll my front fenders because I was experiencing some rubbing on the right front under VERY heavy load (I don't think it was actually rubbing on the fender, but on some metal where the fender meets the lwoer valance).
For next year I plan on going with 17" Fikse wheels.
Good luck and hope to see you at the track! ;-)
