JV911 and all
I keep scrolling up to look at your avitar .
Thanks for the advise all. Next step is to buy the book. I'm test driving the high mileage one on Thursday. I found the e-bay 911 attractive. It looks clean and the rebuilt engine initially sounded nice. But your comments about the possible resprayed rear and inexpensive rebuild cost has me wondering.
How mush would a quality rebuild cost? Top end?
Once again, thanks.
Ron

You should be able to find a nice 87-89 911 3.2 for the high teens easily. It just takes time to find the right one, but when you find it you'll know.

Something is going on with the right rear corner of the car. The tail light lens doesn't fit, neither does the rubber bellows that connects the bumper to the fender extension, and worst of all the leading edge of the rear valance fits outside the fender extension instead of tucking under it. What's really weird is that the bellows and lens do appear to fit properly in the photo of the right rear wheel. Regarding the "rebuilt" engine, a typical price for a rebuild today is closer to $14K - the seller would certainly have to provide receipts for what exactly was done. It's also funny that "Pristine" on the license plate frame is blacked out on some of the photos, and not others. I have a hunch that these pictures are not all current. I would advise you to call Pristine Porsche in Huntington Beach and find out who they are and what they do.

I almost bought an 87' Carrera 5 years ago that had 160,000 miles on the clock and the seller was willing to let it go for 14,500. I ended up passing on it since there was the strong likelyhood of very expensive maintenance or repair looming in the future. I was described very similarly to the one you mention. I was worried about the engine needing at least a top end due to the mileage and the propensity for these things to have accelerated valve guide wear. And even though they are thought to be near bullet proof, is it possible that the tranny may need some freshening up too? So 20,000 seems way too high for that particular car. For 20,000 you can almost certainly do better.

Both the cars you asked about are over priced IMO. Forget the first one, since its over priced with a lot of miles. Its not all that hard to find an nice carrera coupe with a lot less miles in that price range.
As far as the second one goes the starting bid is 22k so who knows what he's really asking? He's run that car on eBay 3 or 4 times already with no buyers. For 22k you should be able to find a nice g-50 carrera. I would not even invesitgate those 2 further.

Agreed that 20k is way high. A gent here locally (SW Ohio) put his 170k '85 911 on eBay with a no reserve and starting price of $9500 and it didn't sell. Seemed to be an ok car, but don't know much else about it. Anyway...I would have to agree that the first one is way high.

Someone in Raleigh sold their 86 Carrera with 245,000 miles
Fresh engine rebuilt down to the crank and G-50 converions with about 10,000 miles since the install
All receipts of service from 1986.
Interior was a bit worn and the suspension needed attention.
He was orignally asking $15,000 last year and let it go for around $8,500.

I wouldn't pay more than $15k for a 200,000 mile car in excellent condition. You can also find SCs with that kind of mileage at around $10k. The problem is really that so many of these cars are way less than 200k, so the market for selling them is very small.

I test drove the 200k mile 911 yesterday and was unimpressed. It felt and looked tired. On the bright side I found a promising prospect. I travel to Norther california often and found a guards red coupe, 1988, with 100k, original owner, and recently had the top end rebuilt (less than 1000 miles ago). I talked to the shop that services it and all seems legit. He's asking $22k. It's got linen colored interior and no whale tail. No accidents and only a respray on the fron hood to cover rock chips. So it really fits the bill on the surface. The only kicker is that I'm not a red car guy but the 80's coupes in guard red and black fuches really do look nice. I've got some thinking to do on this. What do you all think of the price and details?

IMO I would not have even wasted my time looking at a 22k 200k mile car especially if its not even a color you wanted.
Lots of good responses on this board for your original question, basically telling you its not really reasonable at that price, are you really a buyer or just bored?
