Default install sound mat w/engine in?

It looks like you could do this. take off the airbox cover, put the 3m stuff on the firewall and then stick the pad on.

Anyone done this with engine in? Tips?

I did it by doing the partial engine drop. I didn't feel there was enough room otherwise.

It can be done. Remove the airbox & maf to give yourself some room. Mine went on & is staying on just fine without a drop.

edit: But I should have asked what car? My 3.2 was not hard but other years . . . .????

If it's the SC in your avatar - no. Putting that pad in without a partial engine drop will lead to tears (not boo-hoo) in the material. And speaking of tears, cuts, blood, etc., have a nice supply of bandages on hand...

You don't need it. But mine has this ugly glue remnants. Have not had one for a year.

Will research the partial drop method.

I ran without one for 6 months or so. It is MUCH quieter in the passenger zone with an OEM mat installed. I can't speak for the foil version. And you're right, the glue is an eyesore without.

True story: when I first started looking for a 911, the first car that caught my eye was a marine blue coupe in Florida. When the PO sent me the high-res pics, I saw a huge amount of surface rust in the engine bay & passed on the car. Guess what is was . . . . . . . glue residue.

Of course you don't need it but an old droopy one looks like crap and a new one really tiddys things up back there. BTW you can really tell the difference in the noise level.

And yes as your "Aircooliness" eludes to your hands and fore arms are going to look like you fended off an attack by a weasel.

I use the term "Aircooliness" with the utmost respect.

I just removed mine (whilst waiting to poke the engine back in after trans rebuild), as the material was disintegrating and foamy-bits were heading for the fan. The engine-out method is way easier.

Personally, I like the sound of my engine soooo much, I'm leaving it out. I've cleaned up the glue residue with Goo-off, and DW-40. So, It's not completely grotesque in there. I really like the sounds coming from out-back, however that's just my prsonal preference.

One question: does the "noise-reducing" material retain heat in the engine compartment? My guess is, yes. For us hot weather/desert dwellers I'd think heat-retension would be a bad thing.

Search on pelican, some one did it recently, I think they just loosened the mounts and dropped it a little which as most know is a 5 minute job. They posted a how-to too. I always think it would be nice to put a sheet of dynamat in there then the pad, would really make it quiet, I spose you could just put the dynamat on the inside of the car, not sure if it would have the same effect.

If you're concerned about noise more than weight/performance and heat-management, you can always put a thin layer of lead-sheeting beneith the carpet and rear seats/rear window. A friend who does restorations has successfully reduced noise by placing lead-sheeting below the rear window carpeting in 356's and 911's with very good results. Yeah, it weighs a bit more, however if you lose the engine compartment sound-proofing pad for better heat management, and include the lead-sheeting for sound ... seems like a win-win for you and the engine, IMHO. You'll also reduce the possibility of pulling old disintegrating foam bits into the fan and stacking it up inside the shrouding and oil cooler.

Just my 2-cents.

A timely thread. I just took mine out Sunday as it was drooping and the ends were disintegrating. I cut the ends off, took a putty knife to the glue on the top, then it slid out pretty easily. There did not appear to be much glue on the front of the pad. Other than the glue remnants, I think I'll leave it out, doesn't seem to be much noisier, with a Targa there's alot of wind noise anyway.

The prior owner of my Targa removed the sound pad and repainted the engine compartment.

It looks too nice to re-install the pad.

It's up to you as to how "quiet" (man, is that a relative term when discussing these air-cooled beauties!!) you want it in your cabin. When I did have all my interior bits still in the car, I had no sound deadening pad in the engine bay ...already removed by the PO. And I wouldn't have it any other way. It sounded very cool and "purposeful," but was still able to hear a cd; just don't expect your HiFi to shine through. Take it out completely and see how you like it ...or whether you can live w/o it. You can always replace it or clean up the residue later should you get that itch.

Edward
