yeah I know, it was really stupid of me to do that, but the car was just to gorgeous. The only thing really "wrong" with the car is a touch of surface rust on the underside of the gas tank (wire brush and protective coating in a spray can will take care of that) and a tiny leak at the fuel pump, and the fuel pump is being replaced Friday. I'm trying to split all my purchases up so I don't spend too much at once, so at the beginning of May I'll buy the carrera chain tensioners. I just can't wait to put headers and an M&K exhaust on it

Well, I took it to scott this morning and he checked it out, pretty much as thorough as can be without tearing the engine apart, including a test drive, on a lift, etc, and he said it looks great. The car is really clean inside and out, even the undercarriage is clean, and he seemed really surprised that the car leaks absolutely no oil whatsoever, apparently a few drops here and there is the norm. But anyways, he said it looks great and drives great, so I'll be ordering my carrera chain tensioners and turbo lower valve covers within the next day or two. One interesting thing about the car is that the heat has been removed, completely. Well, the way I see it, that means there's no need for the heat exchangers anymore, so it's my way of justifying headers
But yeah, a nice healthy car complete with stainless braided brake lines and a few other little toys already on it. Woohoo!

Congratulations on your purchase. You'll enjoy the SC.
I have the pop off valve on my 79 SC. Within 6 months of my purchase in 1984 I had my air box blow. Sounds like a bomb going off. The car was tuned up at the time and always stays tuned up. I notice that many of the times I detect backfires is when the weather turns from hot to cold. I lived in Houston at the time and the air box blew one cool morning in November. I haven't had another air box blow in 24 years. (Hard to believe I've had the car this long).
I also took a different path with respect to the Carrera tensioners. I had the mechanical stops added to the tensioner shafts early on. I figure if the stock tensioners have lasted over 25 years, I'll just use the mechanical stops and replace the OEM tensioners if I ever go into the engine. The car now has 211k miles and I'm still waiting (but in no hurry).
The mechanical stops prevent a total catastrophic failure if a tensioner were to ever drop; but you would hear the rattling and be able to pull over. For me the use of the mechanical stops is an acceptable and less expensive option. See the "tensioner guard" section of the attached link. $23 for a set of two. Obviously the Carrera tensioner solution works as well but for me, this was a viable alternative.

Awesome, thanks. $23 is a lot better than nearly $700, and with those on I'd feel a lot safer. So the carrera tensioners and turbo valve covers are on my project list on pelican parts now. Thanks for the tips.
