95/98 octane??

Post 95/98 octane??

Hi guys

I wonder if anyone can recommend or comment upon the use of the lower octane 95 fuel for a 1988 Carrera 3.2. I know the 98 give better performance - I can fell it, but does the lower octane actually damege the engine or affect its longevity?

The manual for my '89 911 cab indicates octane ratings above 92 CLC or AKI (the number shown in the US on the gasoline pump). I use 93 octane in my car and it runs great, no engine knock.

The 911s have high compression and therefore must use high octane (98) gas. If you use lower (95) octanes you risk early detonations (engine knock).

Do not be confused with US data, they use different methods to measure the octane index (MON vs. RON) and the figures are not directly comparable.

Hi:
Yes...carefull..USA method yields octane numbers "about" 5 points lower for equivalent grade of gasoline ( Euro 98 ~ USA 93). RON vs MON method, I believe.

thanks for your comments - I kindda thought that but wanted confirmation or otherwise.

It's also that the fuel is going up with all this "war-thing" and now I pay more than €80 ~ $80 to fill a tank that lasts me just over a week

This topic has been done to death in the UK. Some people still advise that you MUST use 98 octane, but 911 experts such as Autofarm (there used to be a section on their website - try FAQ) and AmD have confirmed that there is no problem running on 95. Those running track days or DEs tend to use 98 for that little extra protection against detonation.

I have used both in my 89 Carrera with no ill effect. I prefer 98 as it seems to run a little smoother. Can't say I have noticed any performance difference at all.

One piece of advice I have heard is to steer clear of discount or Supermarket petrol. It doesn't have all the additives that help clean the engine. EVO magazine recently tested this hypothesis in the context of evaluating Shell Optimax petrol and concluded that there is a significant difference in the cleaning properties of premium and cheap petrol. They measured carbon deposits on valves before and after.

I must admit, I do notice the performance difference - when pushed but otherwise, in normal motoring, no, there is no noticeable difference. As to knocking, again, I have been listening hard to see if I can discern the slightest indication of knocking and cant hear it. Also, when these cars were made in 84+, was there a 98 octane (93 for USA) readily available - I dont seem to remember so... Also, did teh P engineers design to this higher octane back in the late 70's - again,I think not.

Anyhow, if this war goes ahead, I think I might be running mine on "spittle" <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

by the by, for our European friends who talk "98 octane" and such like - I have no connection with <a href="http://www.911uk.com/forum/" target="_blank">http://www.911uk.com/forum/</a> but I do go there often to "chat" to europeans and exchange info on geographical-related topics, like suppliers, prices, events, etc - please try and visit once in a while...

Boy am I glad I don't buy gas in Europe...

I usually put 1-2 tanks in my truck a week. It costs me around $30-35. That's the 87octane US or 92 in Europe. She drinks down about 20 gallons. Gas must be around $5-5.50 over there. so I'd be dumping $100-200 a week in fuel. That's ridiculous. I wouldn't have any reasons not to sell my truck then!!! <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />
